PART 4

Sunlight filled Harper’s downtown office as Alexis arranged photographs, recordings, and printed reports across the conference table.

Her jacket was still dusty from the roadside confrontation.

She hadn’t stopped to change.

The evidence mattered more.

“They’re getting bolder,” Harper said, examining images of the damaged patrol SUV.

“Attempting murder in broad daylight. Briggs must be desperate.”

Alexis opened the recording from Ali’s bar.

“Listen to this part again.”

Riker’s drunken remarks about Briggs and Judge Wittmann played clearly.

Harper began taking notes.

“That’s the missing link we needed.”

“Proves the corruption goes beyond the department.”

Someone knocked.

Investigator Daniel Cross entered carrying a thick folder.

He greeted Alexis and Harper with a serious expression.

“Commander Ward,” he said, offering his hand.

“I’ve spent the morning reviewing your evidence. I apologize. It took a murder attempt to get our attention.”

“Just call me Alexis,” she replied.

Cross explained that he had opened an official inquiry.

He praised the careful documentation, multiple recordings, and preserved evidence.

But the larger pattern concerned him most.

“This isn’t random brutality. It’s systematic.”

Harper displayed records of similar incidents dating back 5 years.

Many involved Briggs or officers working under his authority.

The victims were Black motorists.

In numerous cases, important evidence had mysteriously disappeared.

“Except this time,” Alexis said, “they picked someone who could fight back and knew how to document everything.”

Cross nodded.

His investigators had already visited the police station.

Several officers immediately requested leave.

Others attempted to destroy records before federal personnel intervened.

“Briggs was there?” Harper asked.

“Left as soon as he saw our badges, but not before we secured the computer systems.”

Cross opened a folder containing internal correspondence.

“Your traffic stop wasn’t spontaneous, Commander.”

The department had monitored Alexis’s vehicle for days.

Briggs had personally selected the deputies who would stop her.

Alexis’s jaw tightened.

“Because I’m Black and drive a nice car?”

“Partially, but also because they’d observed you visiting your mother. They assumed having family in their jurisdiction would make you vulnerable to pressure.”

Cross explained that threatening relatives had been used against other victims.

“Not this time,” Alexis said quietly.

Harper’s phone vibrated.

Briggs had announced an emergency press conference.

He intended to portray Alexis as a dangerous former soldier whose combat training made her a public threat.

Cross was unimpressed.

“Classic deflection. But it won’t work.”

Investigators had recovered messages in which Briggs discussed provoking Alexis into a violent reaction.

He had wanted confrontation from the beginning.

What he hadn’t expected was for her to survive and preserve evidence of what happened.

The group spent the following hour preparing for the preliminary hearing.

Cross confirmed that the federal investigation would take priority over the local proceedings.

This significantly weakened Judge Wittmann’s ability to influence the case.

More evidence continued emerging.

False police reports.

Missing recordings.

Coordinated harassment.

Previous victims whose complaints had been ignored.

Meanwhile, deputies were beginning to refuse Briggs’s orders.

Some contacted federal investigators and offered testimony.

“The thin blue line is cracking,” Cross observed.

Harper remained concerned.

“He won’t accept that. His whole identity is built on power, on being untouchable.”

“Then we make sure every attack backfires,” Alexis replied.

“Every threat becomes evidence. Every attempt to silence us proves our case.”

They agreed on a strategy.

Harper would handle the legal proceedings.

Cross would expand the federal investigation.

Alexis would preserve evidence and remain alert to further threats.

“Stay alert,” Cross warned.

“Briggs is the type to take this personally. His power structure is crumbling and he knows it.”

The following week, Alexis entered a packed courtroom.

Reporters, civil rights advocates, and local residents filled nearly every available seat.

Harper walked beside her with a briefcase of evidence.

Cross sat at a separate table.

Across the aisle, Briggs and the department’s attorney attempted to appear confident.

Judge Marshall entered.

Unlike Wittmann, who had recused himself after his relationship with Briggs became public, Marshall was known for independence.

“We’ll begin with the federal evidence,” the judge announced.

Cross approached with recordings and transcripts.

Federal investigators had recovered backup audio from police body microphones.

The recordings had been deliberately hidden in an incorrectly categorized archive.

Briggs shifted in his chair.

“The first recording is from Deputy Dawson’s microphone, timestamped to the initial traffic stop.”

The courtroom fell silent.

Dawson’s recorded voice filled the room.

“Look at this one. Driving Daddy’s car, I bet. These people always trying to show off what they ain’t earned.”

Then came Riker.

“Time to teach some respect. Been too long since we had a good one.”

The recording continued with racial insults and discussion of using force before the officers had even approached Alexis.

“Dawson, watch this. Going to make her squirm.”

“Riker, just don’t leave marks where cameras can see. You know the drill.”

Several spectators reacted audibly.

Harper stood.

“Your honor, this proves premeditation. The officers planned to use excessive force before any contact with my client.”

The department’s attorney argued that the recordings might have been altered.

Cross explained that federal forensic specialists had authenticated them.

He played the audio from the moment officers dragged Alexis from her vehicle.

The impacts were audible.

So were the threats.

And the distinctive sound of Dawson’s taser.

Harper addressed the judge.

“These recordings prove she acted in self-defense against an orchestrated attack motivated by racial bias.”

Briggs gripped the table.

Cross continued presenting evidence.

Internal communications.

Statements from officers who refused to participate in misconduct.

Records of systematic evidence destruction.

Judge Marshall reviewed the transcripts.

Then the ruling came.

“Based on this evidence, I’m dismissing the charges of assaulting an officer and resisting arrest. Commander Ward’s actions clearly constitute self-defense against excessive force and civil rights violations.”

Whispers swept through the courtroom.

Briggs jumped to his feet.

“This is nonsense,” he shouted.

“She attacked my officers. We can’t let these people—”

“Lieutenant Briggs,” Judge Marshall interrupted sharply.

“Control yourself or be held in contempt.”

“Your choice of words is telling.”

Harper requested dismissal of the remaining charges.

The judge agreed.

“So ordered.”

The case would also be referred to the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Alexis remained composed.

But for the first time since the highway stop, she felt genuine relief.

Judge Marshall addressed her directly.

“Commander, I apologize for the ordeal you’ve endured. This court failed in its duty to protect citizens from abuse of power.”

“Thank you, your honor,” Alexis replied.

Outside, residents approached Alexis with stories of their own encounters with abusive officers.

The court’s decision had given them hope.

Cross warned that the investigation was far from finished.

“This is just the beginning.”

“The federal investigation will continue. More victims are coming forward.”

“Good,” Alexis replied.

“The whole system needs exposure.”

Later that evening, Alexis returned home.

She finally allowed herself a small smile.

The court had cleared her.

The department’s misconduct was being exposed.

For the first time, it seemed that the system might actually change.

Then her phone rang.

Her mother’s number appeared on the screen.

But when Alexis answered, the voice belonged to her neighbor, Mrs. Taylor.

“Alexis, they’re here. Four patrol cars. They’re going into your mama’s house right now.”

Alexis dropped the glass she was holding.

It shattered across the kitchen floor.

“What? Who’s there?”

“The sheriff’s department. They’re saying something about obstruction charges, evidence tampering. Your mama was just sitting on her porch.”

“They’re being so rough with her.”

Alexis grabbed her keys.

“Call Harper’s office. Tell them exactly what’s happening. I’m on my way.”

Before she reached the door, her phone filled with notifications.

New headlines were appearing everywhere.

They claimed that classified details from her Delta Force service revealed a violent and unstable past.

Photographs of fallen teammates were being used to suggest that she suffered from uncontrollable anger.

Her military record had become ammunition in another smear campaign.

Then Harper called.

“They’re crucifying you on every channel,” she warned.

“Briggs must have connections in military intelligence. This leak came from somewhere high up.”

“They have my mother,” Alexis replied.

“Four patrol cars at her house.”

“I know. I’ve got people heading there now. But Alexis, this is coordinated.”

Outside, reporters began pounding on Alexis’s door.

Camera flashes illuminated her windows.

“Commander Ward, is it true you were discharged for excessive force?”

“Did your combat experience make you attack those officers?”

“Are you currently under psychiatric care?”

Alexis moved away from the windows.

Mrs. Taylor called again.

“They put her in handcuffs, Alexis. Your mama’s crying, but they won’t let me near her. They’re saying she destroyed evidence, but she ain’t done nothing.”

“Is she hurt?”

“They grabbed her arms so rough. She kept asking for her heart medicine, but they wouldn’t let her get it.”

“Stay with her if you can. I’m sending my lawyer.”

Alexis’s hands tightened.

Her mother was frightened, in custody, and asking for medication.

Outside, reporters continued shouting.

More damaging stories appeared online.

Then Harper sent another message.

“Your mother’s being processed at county jail. Briggs himself signed the warrant.”

A second warning followed.

“They’re painting you as unstable. Want you to react badly.”

“Don’t give them anything.”

Alexis sat in the darkened living room.

Briggs had turned her service, her sacrifices, and the deaths of her teammates into weapons against her.

He had even targeted her mother.

For a moment, the weight of everything threatened to overwhelm her.

Then her thinking changed.

She began reviewing the connections she had uncovered.

The financial records.

The false arrests.

The missing evidence.

The officers who feared Briggs.

She had spent weeks defending herself against each new attack.

Now she intended to expose the entire organization behind them.

And Briggs had no idea how much evidence she was about to bring forward.
