PART 3

By the time Alexis reached Harper’s office, photographs and reports from the garage confrontation were already spreading through local news outlets.

Harper placed a printed article on her desk.

“They’re spinning this faster than I expected.”

The headline portrayed Alexis as an unstable veteran who had attacked officers inside a parking structure.

“They’re painting you as someone who seeks out confrontation.”

Alexis examined the article.

Anonymous police sources described her as dangerous and unpredictable.

“They moved quickly.”

“Briggs is smarter than he looks,” Harper replied.

She explained that Briggs had already spent 2 hours meeting with District Attorney Marston following the garage incident.

“Let me guess, they’re expediting the charges.”

Harper nodded.

Marston was claiming the case presented an urgent public safety concern.

The goal appeared to be accelerating Alexis’s prosecution before her legal team could gather additional evidence.

Alexis paced across the office.

“They’re desperate.”

She recalled Slate’s frightened warning.

“Those deputies this morning. They were scared, not just of me, but of Briggs.”

“One of them said Briggs would kill them if they failed.”

Harper opened another file.

“That tracks with what I’ve been hearing.”

Three complaints from the previous year involved officers who claimed they had been pressured into falsifying official reports.

Every complaint had been dismissed.

Nevertheless, the pattern was unmistakable.

“We need to go higher,” Alexis said.

“Federal oversight.”

Harper mentioned Daniel Cross, an investigator at the Justice Department who specialized in department-wide corruption.

He had reportedly been seeking a reason to investigate the county for months.

“I have a contact at the Justice Department, Daniel Cross. He specializes in department-wide corruption cases.”

“He’s been looking for a way into this jurisdiction for months. Your case might be exactly what he needs.”

“Make the call,” Alexis agreed. “But Briggs will retaliate as soon as he knows we’re reaching out to the feds.”

“He’s already retaliating.”

Harper showed her a message from a courthouse contact.

Briggs had called an emergency closed-door meeting with senior deputies.

No official record had been made.

According to the source, Briggs had been furious.

He repeatedly spoke about containing Alexis before she caused further damage.

One deputy suggested allowing the situation to calm down.

Briggs threatened his family.

Alexis considered the implications.

“He’s showing weakness. Strong leaders don’t need to threaten their own people.”

“But wounded animals are the most dangerous,” Harper warned.

A knock interrupted them.

Harper’s assistant entered carrying additional paperwork.

“These just came from traffic court. They’re issuing citations against Ms. Ward’s vehicle.”

The documents alleged expired registration, defective equipment, and missing license plates.

Harper examined them.

“All fabricated.”

“They’re trying to build a paper trail.”

“Make you look like a chronic offender.”

“Small-time intimidation,” Alexis observed.

“They’re throwing everything they can think of, hoping something sticks.”

“It’s more than that,” Harper replied.

Each citation could justify another traffic stop.

The department was creating opportunities for further confrontations.

Alexis recognized the shift in tactics.

“They’re learning.”

“This morning, they tried brute force. Now they’re using bureaucracy as a weapon.”

Harper wanted federal intervention immediately.

Cross might be able to arrive within 48 hours.

But Briggs still had time to act.

Then Harper revealed another document.

Briggs had filed a motion to revoke Alexis’s bail, alleging that she posed a danger to police officers.

Judge Wittmann was reviewing the request.

“Wittmann? Isn’t he the one who golfs with Marston?”

“Every Sunday.”

Harper shook her head.

“The system here is a closed loop, Alexis.”

“They protect each other, cover for each other. Breaking that loop won’t be easy.”

“It never is,” Alexis replied.

“But systems like this have weak points.”

“We just have to find them.”

When Alexis returned home, several new citations had been attached to her front door.

She removed them carefully.

The papers were another reminder that Briggs could reach her even in her own neighborhood.

But the confrontation was no longer only about clearing her name.

It had become a struggle to expose an entire network of misconduct.

That evening, Alexis drove to Ali’s bar.

The establishment had served as a gathering place for local officers for decades.

She deliberately arrived during the shift change, when many off-duty deputies were likely to be present.

As she entered, conversations stopped.

At least 15 officers occupied the tables and stools.

The atmosphere turned openly hostile.

Alexis walked to the counter.

“Water,” she told the bartender.

He placed a glass before her and quickly moved away.

A mirror behind the bar gave Alexis a clear view of the room.

At a corner table, Deputy Riker was drinking with several colleagues.

His voice carried across the room.

“Told Briggs not to worry about it. Judge Wittman’s got his back.”

“Been that way since they were rookies together.”

One officer glanced toward Alexis.

Riker laughed.

“What’s she going to do? That dash cam footage is gone. Briggs made sure of it himself. Stayed late to wipe everything clean.”

“No evidence means her word against ours, and we all know how that plays out in Wittmann’s court.”

Alexis slowly set down her water.

Three officers near the pool table began moving toward the exit.

She stood and approached Riker.

“That footage showed everything, didn’t it?”

“That’s why Briggs was so eager to destroy it.”

Riker’s expression hardened.

“You got some nerve coming in here.”

“Just confirming facts,” Alexis said.

“Like how Judge Wittmann takes bribes to dismiss cases against corrupt officers.”

An officer grabbed her shoulder.

“Time for you to leave.”

Alexis remained still.

“Take your hand off me.”

Another stepped closer.

“You’re outnumbered here.”

“Last warning,” Alexis said quietly.

A third officer lunged for her arm.

She redirected him into a nearby table.

Glasses shattered.

The first attacker swung at her.

Alexis blocked the punch and sent him stumbling into his colleague.

Another officer lifted a chair.

She stepped inside his reach as the chair struck the bar and broke apart.

A precise blow left him doubled over.

The remaining attackers rushed together.

Alexis moved quickly, avoiding their strikes and forcing them into one another.

One officer collapsed to his knees.

Another retreated.

The rest of the room watched without intervening.

Alexis turned back toward Riker.

“The footage.”

“Briggs deleted it personally.”

Riker had gone pale.

“You’re crazy coming here like this.”

“Answer the question.”

“Yeah,” he spat.

“He wiped everything. Security footage, too. Spent 2 hours making sure nothing survived. Happy now?”

“Extremely.”

Alexis glanced around the room.

Several officers had their phones raised.

“Anyone else want to add anything about Judge Wittmann’s special relationship with the department?”

Nobody answered.

The injured officers remained on the floor.

Alexis walked toward the door.

No one tried to stop her.

Outside, sirens were already approaching.

She sent Harper a message summarizing Riker’s admission.

The department had destroyed its own footage.

But now one of its officers had openly admitted what happened.

And witnesses had recorded the conversation.

The next morning, Alexis drove toward Harper’s office with the latest evidence organized on her phone.

A patrol SUV appeared behind her.

It followed dangerously close.

Alexis checked her speed.

She was driving exactly at the limit.

The patrol vehicle moved into the opposing lane and pulled alongside her.

Officer Matthews was driving.

Reynolds sat beside him.

Both stared at Alexis with unmistakable hostility.

Then Matthews swerved toward her.

The first collision was relatively light, but it shook her SUV.

Alexis maintained control.

“Here we go,” she murmured.

“Come on,” she said quietly. “Show me what you’re really here for.”

Matthews accelerated and struck her vehicle again.

This time, the impact was much harder.

Alexis had already activated her mounted phone camera.

Ahead, the highway curved sharply beside a steep ditch.

Matthews attempted to force her toward the guardrail.

Alexis braked.

The patrol SUV surged forward.

Matthews struggled to regain control.

“Amateur hour,” Alexis muttered.

She maneuvered her vehicle into the patrol SUV’s rear quarter panel.

The impact caused Matthews to overcorrect.

His cruiser spun across the roadway, struck the shoulder, and rolled into the ditch.

Steam rose from its damaged hood.

Alexis pulled over.

Matthews climbed out, blood running from a cut on his forehead.

“You’re dead,” he shouted.

“Stay where you are,” Alexis called, keeping her phone recording.

“Keep your hands visible.”

Reynolds emerged and reached for his radio.

“Unit 47, officer down.”

Matthews moved toward his weapon.

Alexis intercepted him with two rapid strikes.

He collapsed.

Reynolds began retreating.

“Shots fired. Shots.”

Alexis restrained him before he could escape.

“No shots fired,” she said calmly.

“Just like there was no reason for you to try running me off the road.”

Matthews groaned.

“Briggs will kill you for this.”

“Add that threat to the recording,” Alexis replied.

After checking their injuries, she secured both officers with their own handcuffs.

She then reviewed the footage.

The entire confrontation had been captured.

The first impact.

The second collision.

The attempted roadblock.

The threats.

She immediately sent copies to Harper and the federal contact line.

Then she turned toward the officers.

“You know what the difference is between us?”

“I could have killed you both easily. Instead, you’ll live to face consequences.”

She gestured toward her phone.

“Everything’s recorded. Your careers are over.”

“Briggs owns this county,” Reynolds spat.

“You got nothing.”

“Look around,” Alexis replied.

“Your vehicle’s destroyed. You’re handcuffed to your own bumper. Your attack failed completely. Still think Briggs is winning?”

Neither answered.

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Alexis returned to her SUV.

“Backup’s coming,” Matthews called weakly.

“You won’t get far.”

“I’m not running. I’ll be at my lawyer’s office filing assault charges against both of you. Feel free to send more officers. We’ll add witness intimidation to the list.”

She drove away at the posted speed limit.

Her phone vibrated.

Harper had received the recording.

The federal contact had also responded.

They wanted to interview her immediately.

What had begun as a traffic stop was now becoming evidence of something far more serious.

A coordinated system of intimidation, falsified charges, and violent retaliation.

And for the first time, federal investigators were preparing to examine it.
