PART 3: THE FAMILY SIMON NEVER KNEW

I stepped into the hallway, pulled out my phone, and called Nora back. “She knows everything.”

“Who knows what?” Nora asked over the phone.

“Mrs. Callahan,” I said, already looking up the phone number in Simon’s old contacts list. “She knows who Leo really is.”

Mrs. Callahan answered the call on the fourth ring.

“Mrs. Callahan?” I asked nervously.

“Yes?” she answered politely.

“My name is Gemma, and I am Simon’s wife,” I introduced myself clearly.

“Oh,” she replied softly, and that single word told me immediately that I had finally found the right person.

“Simon contacted you late last year,” I stated firmly.

“Yes, he did,” she confirmed gently.

“I need to know why,” I said quietly into the receiver.

Two hours later, I was sitting across from an eighty-one-year-old woman in her quiet living room. Mrs. Callahan reached over to her side table and pushed an old, faded photograph toward me.

“Which one is Simon?” she asked gently.

She reached out her hand and touched the taller boy in the photograph.

“And who is the other child?” I asked, looking closely at the image.

“That is Julian,” she revealed softly.

“Who is Julian?” I inquired, my brows furrowing in total confusion.

“Julian was Simon’s older brother,” Mrs. Callahan explained clearly.

I stared at her in utter disbelief. “Simon didn’t have a brother. He was an only child.”

“He did have a brother,” she insisted gently.

“No, he grew up believing he had no remaining biological family,” I countered quickly.

“Because he simply didn’t know the truth for most of his life,” Mrs. Callahan told me softly. “They entered the child care system after their parents died in an accident. They were placed in entirely different foster homes, and due to clerical mistakes in the state records, they lost track of each other completely.”

“And Simon only found out about this last year?” I asked, processing the information slowly.

“Yes, that is correct,” she affirmed.

“Did he ever manage to find Julian?” I asked, holding my breath.

Mrs. Callahan looked down at her lap sadly. “He tried his best.”

“What happened when he searched?” I pressed gently.

“Julian had already passed away two years ago,” Mrs. Callahan revealed quietly.

My thoughts drifted back to little Leo sitting on Denise’s floor playing with his wooden train. “No…” I whispered quietly.

Mrs. Callahan held my gaze with deep compassion. “Leo is Julian’s son.”

For a long second, I couldn’t speak or catch my breath.

“So Simon wasn’t…” I started, feeling tears well up in my eyes.

“No, Gemma,” she assured me firmly. “Simon was not his father, he was his uncle.”

I looked back down at the two young boys smiling in the old photograph. “He spent his entire life thinking he was completely alone with no family.”

“Yes,” Mrs. Callahan agreed softly.

“And when he finally discovered his long-lost brother, he was already gone,” I said, feeling the immense weight of Simon’s secret burden.

“But his brother’s son was still here,” Mrs. Callahan reminded me gently.

Leo. Suddenly, every strange action Simon had taken over the past few months looked entirely different to me.

“That is why he couldn’t walk away from him,” I realized out loud.

Mrs. Callahan nodded her head slowly in complete agreement.

That night, Nora returned to my home to check on me. I opened the door and let her walk inside without hesitation.

“Why didn’t he just tell me the truth?” I asked her quietly as we sat down.

Nora looked down at my heavily pregnant stomach with a sad smile. “Do you really need me to answer that for you, Gemma?”

“Yes, I do,” I insisted softly.

“He watched you sell your precious jewelry to pay bills,” Nora pointed out gently.

“I chose to do that for him,” I reminded her instantly.

“You took out a heavy loan against your house,” Nora added softly.

“I chose that too,” I argued quietly.

“You were six months pregnant, raising Sadie, driving him to endless oncology treatments, fighting insurance companies, and barely sleeping at night,” Nora enumerated calmly.

“So what?” I asked, looking at her intently.

“So he knew exactly what you would do if he told you about Leo’s situation,” Nora explained warmly.

“What would I have done?” I asked, though deep down I already knew the answer.

“You would have said yes immediately,” Nora answered with a soft smile. “You would have helped him without hesitation, and maybe even offered to take Leo into your own home before you ever stopped to ask whether you could physically or financially handle it.”

“He really thought I would do that?” I asked quietly.

“He knew with absolute certainty that you would,” Nora confirmed gently.

“Then why did he leave me that letter at all?” I asked, glancing at the desk where the note lay.

“Because telling you that Leo existed was not the same as deciding his future for you without your consent,” Nora explained wisely.

I looked away toward the window, feeling a mixture of profound relief and quiet grief. “He still should have told me.”

“Yes, he should have,” Nora agreed honestly.

“I loved him with all my heart, but that doesn’t make keeping secrets right,” I stated clearly.

“No, it doesn’t,” Nora acknowledged.

“But now I finally understand why he did it,” I confessed softly.

“Understanding it is different from forgiving it right away,” Nora noted gently.

“I know,” I admitted. “And what about the financial trust fund?”

“Part of Leo’s trust came directly from Julian’s remaining estate,” Nora explained clearly. “Simon made sure that all your personal family benefits and house protections were kept completely separate and secure.”

I let out a sudden laugh through my quiet tears. “Of course he made elaborate financial spreadsheets.”

“So many detailed spreadsheets,” Nora chuckled warmly in response.

“He knew I would investigate everything as soon as I found out,” I said, wiping my cheek.

“He knew that absolutely,” Nora agreed with a smile.

“And he knew I would be completely furious with him,” I added.

“He thought you would be terrified, actually,” Nora corrected softly.

For the very first time since the funeral, I laughed genuinely from deep within my chest. I still was not fully ready to become Leo’s legal guardian right away, but for the first time, I felt ready to ask myself whether I could eventually step into that role.

Over the next few weeks, I called Leo’s assigned social caseworker, met extensively with Denise, and spoke directly to a family law attorney.

“Can you actually afford to raise another child right now, Gemma?” the attorney asked me bluntly during our meeting.

“Not right at this moment,” I admitted honestly.

“Good,” the attorney remarked with a nod.

“That is a rather strange response from a lawyer,” I noted with a light chuckle.

“It means you are actually thinking carefully before making a massive life promise,” he explained thoughtfully.

“I am starting to understand how important that is,” I told him quietly.

One quiet evening, I walked up the hill to Simon’s grave in Oakwood Cemetery and gently placed the old photograph of the two young brothers resting against his headstone.

“You found him too late,” I said quietly, looking down at his name carved in the stone. “But you found Leo, and you made sure he wasn’t abandoned.”

My hand rested gently against my stomach as our unborn baby kicked softly.

“So did I,” I whispered with a faint smile. “I am doing this my way, Simon.”

That was the true gift he had left behind for me in the end. It was not an unexpected burden, nor a forced obligation. It was a genuine choice.

The legal guardianship process is still moving forward smoothly step by step. I don’t know exactly what our household will look like a year from now, but Leo visits our house regularly every weekend to play with Sadie. For once in my life, I don’t have a rigid, controlled plan for what comes next, and I am completely okay with that. I couldn’t give Simon back the brother he never got the chance to know, but maybe I could make sure his family wasn’t lost twice.

THE END.
