PART 2

Three neighbors exchanged looks.

Officer Monroe said quietly:

“I witnessed physical contact.”

Karen’s face reddened.

“She was trespassing.”

Marcus pointed toward the house.

“She lives here.”

Karen shook her head.

“You don’t understand. I’ve been watching this house for months.”

Marcus’s eyebrows lifted.

“You’ve been watching my house?”

Karen hesitated.

“I’ve noticed suspicious activity.”

Alyssa finally spoke.

“Nine months, Karen.”

Karen looked at her.

“What?”

“You’ve been doing this for nine months.”

Alyssa’s voice remained calm.

“You’ve questioned me when I came home. You complained when I had packages delivered. You asked why my husband wasn’t with me. You called the homeowners association because I had friends over. You even asked a delivery driver whether I was ‘really’ the homeowner.”

Karen folded her arms.

“Because none of it looked right.”

Marcus stared at her.

“None of what?”

Karen didn’t answer.

Officer Pierce cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Carter, may I see your identification?”

Alyssa handed him her driver’s license.

Pierce looked at it.

Then at the address.

Then back at Alyssa.

He seemed uncomfortable.

“Thank you.”

Marcus turned to him.

“I can provide the deed.”

He disappeared inside for a moment.

Karen watched him go.

Then she looked at Officer Monroe.

“This is absurd.”

Officer Monroe said nothing.

Marcus returned with a folder.

He handed it to Pierce.

The officer opened it.

The deed was clear.

The property belonged to Marcus and Alyssa Carter.

Officer Pierce read the names again.

Then he looked toward Karen.

“Mrs. Whitmore, there appears to be no question that Mrs. Carter resides here.”

Karen’s face hardened.

“She could have changed her name.”

Alyssa almost laughed.

“She did.”

Karen frowned.

“What?”

Alyssa looked at her husband.

“We got married last year.”

Marcus nodded.

“That’s why she is Alyssa Carter.”

Karen opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then opened it again.

“But—”

Officer Monroe interrupted.

“Mrs. Whitmore, you need to step back.”

Karen stared at her.

“You’re taking her side?”

“No.”

Officer Monroe’s voice was firm.

“I’m telling you what I observed.”

Karen looked around.

The neighbors were still watching.

The woman across the street had placed her groceries down.

The lawn mower remained silent.

For the first time, Karen seemed to realize that everyone had witnessed what happened.

Her confidence began to crack.

But Alyssa wasn’t interested in humiliating her.

She simply wanted the confrontation to end.

“Marcus,” she said softly.

He turned.

“Let’s go inside.”

He nodded.

Before they could move, Officer Pierce spoke.

“Mrs. Carter, I do need to ask whether you want to make a complaint.”

Alyssa paused.

She looked at Karen.

Karen looked back.

For nine months, Alyssa had swallowed every insult.

Every accusation.

Every suspicious glance.

Every unnecessary question.

She had told herself Karen was simply difficult.

She had told herself that responding would only make things worse.

But now Karen had crossed a line that could no longer be explained away as neighborhood tension.

Alyssa touched the side of her head where Karen had pulled her hair.

“Yes.”

Karen’s face changed.

“Alyssa—”

Alyssa looked directly at her.

“I want to make a complaint.”

Karen’s voice dropped.

“You’re really going to do this?”

Alyssa nodded.

“Yes.”

Officer Monroe asked for the details.

Alyssa described exactly what happened.

She did not exaggerate.

She did not add a single word.

She told them about Karen grabbing her wrist.

Blocking the walkway.

Pulling her hair.

Threatening to hit her.

The neighbors were asked whether they had seen anything.

One by one, they confirmed what they had witnessed.

The woman across the street said:

“I saw Karen grab her hair.”

The man with the lawn mower nodded.

“I saw it too.”

Another neighbor came out onto his porch.

“I heard her yelling before I looked over.”

Karen stared at them in disbelief.

“You’re all against me?”

Nobody answered.

That silence said enough.

Eventually, the officers asked Karen to explain her side.

She claimed Alyssa had been acting suspiciously.

She said she believed Alyssa was trespassing.

But when asked why she had never contacted the police before that day, Karen couldn’t give a clear answer.

When asked why she had grabbed Alyssa, she said she had been frightened.

Officer Monroe calmly replied:

“You approached her.”

Karen’s lips tightened.

“She was reaching into her purse.”

“For identification.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“You were told.”

Karen said nothing.

The report took nearly forty minutes.

By the time the officers finished, the street had grown quiet again.

Karen received instructions regarding the complaint and was told not to approach Alyssa.

She looked humiliated.

But Alyssa didn’t feel victorious.

She felt tired.

Deeply tired.

Marcus stood beside her.

When the officers finally left, he closed the front door.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Marcus turned.

“I owe you an apology.”

Alyssa looked at him.

“For what?”

“For telling you she was harmless.”

Alyssa sighed.

“You didn’t know she’d do this.”

“I should have listened.”

“You did listen.”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I heard you. That’s different.”

Alyssa looked down.

The grocery bag was still sitting outside.

One orange had rolled all the way toward the curb.

Marcus noticed.

He opened the door again and retrieved it.

When he came back inside, Alyssa was standing in the foyer.
