PART 2

Spencer folded his arms.

“You’ve been repeatedly noncompliant.”

“With what?”

“The community rules.”

“I’ve complied with every legitimate rule.”

Carleen pushed a folder toward me.

“You have accumulated $4,800 in fines.”

I looked at the paperwork.

“Most of these were already disputed.”

“They remain outstanding.”

“Then prove they are valid.”

Spencer leaned forward.

“This isn’t a courtroom.”

“No,” I said. “It isn’t.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You seem to think your former career gives you special privileges.”

“It gives me experience recognizing intimidation.”

The room went silent.

Carleen ended the meeting.

Two weeks later, Reuben was handcuffed.

That was when I stopped believing these were isolated incidents.

And that was why, months later, when Sentinel’s men drove onto my property, I already knew what they were.

They weren’t security officers.

They weren’t police.

They were men who had been taught to behave as though they were.

And that morning, they had come to my house because Carleen had decided I needed to be taught a lesson.

The man with the baton was named Travis Morrow.

I knew that because federal investigators had already identified him.

The second man was Darren Pike.

The third was Lionel Crane.

The fourth stood near the golf cart.

His name was Owen Briggs.

I knew all four names before they stepped onto my lawn.

They didn’t know that.

Travis pointed the baton at me.

“Stand up.”

I remained on one knee.

“I’ll stand when I can.”

“You’re resisting.”

“No.”

“You’re under HOA arrest.”

“There is no such thing.”

He took another step toward me.

“Stand up.”

I slowly rose.

Pain shot through my shoulder.

Estelle came running from the front porch.

“Hayes!”

Travis turned toward her.

“Ma’am, stay inside.”

Estelle froze.

“You just struck my husband.”

“He resisted detention.”

“Detention for what?”

Travis didn’t answer.

That was the mistake.

He should have had an answer.

He didn’t.

Because there was no lawful answer.

Estelle reached for her phone.

Darren stepped toward her.

“Put the phone down.”

“No.”

“You are interfering.”

“With what?”

He reached toward her wrist.

I moved between them.

“Don’t touch my wife.”

Travis raised his baton again.

And then a voice came from behind him.

“Drop it.”

Everything stopped.

A black SUV had turned onto Bayou Drive.

Then another.

Then another.

Doors opened.

Men and women stepped out wearing FBI credentials.

Camille Mortenson walked toward us.

She was holding her badge in one hand.

“Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Travis slowly lowered the baton.

Darren’s face went pale.

Camille looked directly at him.

“Put your hands where I can see them.”

Travis glanced toward the street.

There were now six federal agents.

Two more vehicles had arrived.

He looked at me.

Then at Camille.

Then at the cameras mounted around the house.

His expression changed.

“You recorded this?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

Camille answered for me.

“We did.”

Silence.

She continued:

“And we recorded everything before you entered the property.”

Travis swallowed.

Darren looked at the others.

No one moved.

Camille walked toward me.

“Hayes, are you injured?”

“My shoulder.”

She nodded.

“Medical team is coming.”

Estelle stood beside me.

Her hands were shaking.

Camille looked at her.

“Mrs. Talmadge, you’re safe.”

Estelle nodded.

Then she pointed toward Travis.

“He hit my husband.”

“I know.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“How?”

Camille glanced toward the cameras.

“Because we saw it.”

The sheriff’s office arrived shortly afterward.

This time, real deputies.

Real badges.

Real authority.

And the difference was immediately obvious.

Nobody shouted.

Nobody threatened.

Nobody pretended an HOA rule gave them police powers.

The Sentinel men were separated and interviewed.

The golf cart was photographed.

Their uniforms were documented.

Their equipment was collected pursuant to the investigation.

And the video was preserved.

Every second of it.

That evening, I sat in the emergency room while a doctor examined my shoulder.

Nothing was broken.

Severe bruising.

A strained joint.

Painful.

But temporary.

May sat beside Estelle in the waiting room.

When I came out, she stood immediately.

“Grandpa.”

“Hey.”

She looked at my shoulder.

“Did they really hit you?”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled.

“Why?”

I crouched carefully in front of her.

“Because they thought nobody would stop them.”

She stared at me.

“Were they police?”

“No.”

“But they looked like police.”

“That’s what made them dangerous.”

May looked toward Estelle.

“Are they going to jail?”

I glanced at Camille.

She was standing several feet away.

She didn’t answer for me.

I said:

“If they broke the law, they’ll face the consequences.”

May nodded.

Then she hugged me carefully.

That night, she placed one of Annalee’s ceramic mugs beside my chair.

It was chipped around the rim.

I looked at it.

“Your mom made that.”

“I know.”

“Why did you put it here?”

May shrugged.

“Because she would have wanted you to have it.”

I couldn’t answer.

So I just held the mug.

The next morning, federal agents executed multiple warrants connected to the Sentinel investigation.

The story broke nationally.

PRIVATE HOA SECURITY COMPANY ACCUSED OF IMPERSONATING LAW ENFORCEMENT

Then came another headline.

RETIRED FBI SUPERVISOR ATTACKED BY PRIVATE SECURITY OFFICERS DURING FEDERAL INVESTIGATION

Then another.

HOA PRESIDENT LINKED TO SECURITY COMPANY FINANCES

Carleen Voorhees resigned before the board could remove her.

Spencer disappeared for two days.

He was eventually located by investigators.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Uniforms designed to resemble law enforcement.

Improper badges.

False claims of arrest authority.

Unauthorized detention.

Threats.

Physical force.

Financial arrangements between Sentinel and HOA officials.

The federal investigation eventually uncovered years of complaints that had been ignored.

People had been afraid to speak.

Residents had paid fines because they didn’t know they could challenge them.

Elderly homeowners had been intimidated.

One man had sold his house after repeated confrontations.
