PART 2

Weston didn’t move.

“Slowly.”

Florence reached into the jacket.

Two fingers entered the pocket.

She withdrew a black leather credential wallet.

Then she opened it.

The badge caught the afternoon sunlight.

Gold letters.

Federal seal.

FBI.

Weston’s expression changed instantly.

Decker stared.

The other officers stepped closer.

One of them whispered:

“Agent?”

Florence held the credential where everyone could see it.

“Special Agent Florence Osborne.”

Nobody spoke.

The street had gone strangely quiet.

Even the neighbors seemed to understand that something significant had just happened.

Weston’s face had lost its confidence.

He looked at the badge.

Then at Florence.

Then back at the badge.

“You’re FBI?”

“Yes.”

Weston swallowed.

“Why didn’t you say that earlier?”

Florence closed the credential wallet.

“Because I wasn’t required to begin a traffic stop by announcing my occupation.”

Decker lowered his eyes.

Weston looked toward the motorcycle.

Then toward the saddlebag.

Then back at Florence.

“What’s your assignment?”

Florence paused.

“That’s classified.”

Weston’s face tightened.

“Are you investigating this department?”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Going home.”

The answer somehow made everything more uncomfortable.

Weston looked at the other officers.

“Everybody stand down.”

The officers relaxed.

Decker immediately stepped back.

But Florence wasn’t finished.

She looked at Weston.

“You asked what was inside the saddlebag.”

“Yes.”

“Would you still like to know?”

Weston hesitated.

“No.”

Florence nodded.

“Good.”

A neighbor across the street lowered his phone.

The teenagers stopped whispering.

The man with the garden hose stared openly.

Weston looked embarrassed.

“Agent Osborne, I apologize if—”

Florence interrupted gently.

“Don’t.”

Weston stopped.

She continued:

“Don’t apologize because you discovered my occupation.”

His expression changed.

She held his gaze.

“Ask yourself whether you would have apologized if I were just another woman riding home.”

Weston had no answer.

Florence looked toward Decker.

“You tried to slow this down.”

Decker looked surprised.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Thank you.”

Then she turned back toward Weston.

“You had a complaint. You stopped me. That’s reasonable.”

Weston nodded.

“You asked questions. I answered.”

Another nod.

“You asked for permission to search. I declined.”

Weston said nothing.

“You then escalated an investigation without explaining what specific evidence supported that escalation.”

Florence’s voice never rose.

“That is where this went wrong.”

Weston looked at the pavement.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then dispatch crackled over the radio.

“Unit 14, confirm status.”

Weston lifted his radio.

“Situation resolved.”

He paused.

Then added:

“Stand by.”

Florence watched him.

“You should probably request the dispatch recording.”

Weston looked up.

“Why?”

“Because if this becomes an internal review, someone will need the original complaint.”

Weston frowned.

“Internal review?”

Florence nodded.

“I didn’t say there would be one.”

That distinction made him more nervous.

“But there could be.”

Weston looked at her.

“You’re filing a complaint?”

Florence shook her head.

“Not yet.”

“Then what?”

“I haven’t decided.”

Weston stared at her.

Florence put the badge away.

“Sergeant, I’m not interested in ruining your career.”

His expression softened slightly.

“But I’m also not interested in pretending this didn’t happen.”

Weston nodded.

“I understand.”

Florence picked up her helmet.

Then she looked at the officers surrounding her.

“Do you?”

No one answered.

She put the helmet on.

Before lowering the visor, she looked at Decker.

“Officer Decker.”

“Yes?”

“Next time you see something that doesn’t feel right, speak.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

Florence started the motorcycle.

The engine came alive with a deep mechanical roar.

The officers stepped aside.

She pulled away slowly.

No dramatic acceleration.

No attempt to prove anything.

Just a controlled departure down Maple Street.

Weston watched until she disappeared around the corner.

Then he looked at Decker.

“What?”

Decker hesitated.

“You were wrong.”

Weston stared at him.

“I know.”

“No.”

Decker swallowed.

“I mean about more than the FBI part.”

Weston looked away.

Decker continued.

“You treated her differently after seeing the badge.”

Weston didn’t respond.

“You know you did.”

Still nothing.

Decker looked toward the empty street.

“She shouldn’t have needed the badge.”

Weston finally turned toward him.

“You done?”

“No.”

The younger officer took a breath.

“She was cooperative before we knew who she was.”

Weston stared at him.

“And she was cooperative afterward.”

The words hung between them.

Weston finally nodded.

“Get in the car.”

They drove back to the station.

But the incident followed them.

The dispatch recording was pulled.

The body-camera footage was reviewed.

The original complaint was examined.

There was one major problem.

The caller had not reported reckless driving.

The caller had reported a “loud red motorcycle.”

That was all.

No speed.

No dangerous maneuver.

No near collision.

No weaving.

No license plate.

Just noise.

And the cruiser had followed Florence for less than a minute before the stop.

Weston watched the footage alone that evening.

He watched himself approach Florence.

He watched her answer every question.

He watched himself ask where she got the money for the motorcycle.

He watched himself ask what kind of work she did.

He watched her remain calm.

Then he watched the moment he ordered additional units.

He paused the video.

For several seconds, he stared at the frozen image.

Florence stood beside the red motorcycle with her helmet under one arm.

Nothing about her behavior suggested danger.

Nothing about her words suggested hostility.

Yet he had interpreted every boundary she established as resistance.

He resumed the recording.

Then came the badge.

He watched his own face change.

He leaned back.

The realization was uncomfortable.

The badge hadn’t changed Florence.

It had changed him.

The next morning, Weston received a call from the deputy chief.

“Come to my office.”

Weston entered.

The deputy chief had the body-camera footage on a monitor.

“You’ve seen this?”

“Yes.”

“Any issues?”

Weston hesitated.

“Yes.”

The deputy chief turned off the screen.

“What do you think the biggest issue is?”

Weston thought about giving the safe answer.

Instead, he said:

“I made assumptions.”

The deputy chief waited.

“I assumed the motorcycle meant money meant something.”

Another pause.

“I assumed her refusal to consent to a search meant she was hiding something.”

He looked down.

“And I escalated after she questioned me.”

The deputy chief nodded.

“What changed when she showed the badge?”

Weston swallowed.

“I became careful.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew who she was.”

The deputy chief leaned back.

“And what does that tell you?”

Weston didn’t answer.

The deputy chief did.

“It tells me you knew how to be careful all along.”

Weston closed his eyes for a moment.

The sentence hurt because it was true.

Two days later, Florence received an email.

It was from the department.

They requested a meeting.

She almost declined.

Then she accepted.

Not because she wanted an apology.

Because she wanted to know what they intended to do differently.

When she arrived at the station, Captain Elaine Mercer met her at the entrance.

Weston was not in the room.
