Waking in the middle of the night, she felt a harsh, unpleasant light—so bright it pierced through her closed eyelids.
Her husband had likely fallen asleep at the computer again, as he often had lately. He had been working late into the night, staying up for hours, sometimes drifting off before even making it to bed.
She had grown used to it, blaming it on exhaustion. It was 2:30 a.m.
She got up, wrapping herself in a warm robe, and quietly walked toward the desk to wake him and guide him back to bed.
He was asleep, his face buried in his hands, his breathing uneven. She reached out to touch his shoulder—but her eyes caught the computer screen.

She stood completely still, as if the world around her had frozen. Several more tabs were open beside the chat window. The titles seemed to shout:

On several pages, she noticed something that took her breath away: loan applications, charity requests, letters asking for consultations.
The dates were recent. He had done all of this in secret, at night, while she slept beside him, unaware.
She slowly sank into a chair. Her hands trembled, her eyes filled with tears.
