PART 3
One day, Adrián returned to the room where his sons had spent so many nights growing weaker.
The ventilation grilles were gone.
Sections of the walls remained exposed so inspectors could continue examining them.
Several forgotten toys stood in a dusty row on a shelf.
Among them, Adrián discovered a drawing.
It showed 4 people holding hands.
Lucía.
Adrián.
Lucas.
Martín.
In the corner of the page, the children had drawn a large house and colored it completely black.
Later, Adrián asked Martín why he had chosen that color.
The boy answered simply:
“Because at night, the house made everything hurt.”
Adrián couldn’t remain in the room.
He walked into the hallway, overwhelmed.
Elena discovered him leaning against the wall.
“I spent more than €3,000,000,” he murmured. “I had doctors, security guards, employees, cameras… and nobody noticed a ventilation grille.”
“Because everyone was looking where you told them to look.”
“But you weren’t?”
“I had just arrived. I didn’t know what I was supposed to ignore.”
Her answer stayed with him.
Several weeks afterward, Adrián called the household employees together.
He didn’t issue threats or speak about revenge.
Instead, he made a straightforward request.
“If anyone notices anything strange involving my sons or this house, speak up. Even if you think I’ll get angry.”
Mrs. Roldán, the longtime housekeeper, looked down.
Then she cautiously raised her hand.
“The cook who left a year ago said she smelled something strange upstairs.”
Adrián went still.
“And what happened?”
“Víctor said she was imagining things. You were overwhelmed, and nobody wanted to push the matter.”
A heavy silence settled over the room.
That revelation was something Adrián could never entirely undo.
For years, the fear surrounding him had helped preserve his authority.
But that same fear had also shielded people who depended on everyone remaining too intimidated to question them.
It had prevented warnings from reaching him when his children needed protection most.
That afternoon, Adrián stepped outside.
Lucas tossed him a ball.
“Dad, come play.”
Adrián removed his jacket.
“Against whom?”
“All 3 of us.”
“That’s not fair.”
Martín lifted his shoulders.
“You’re big.”
Adrián laughed loudly before chasing them across the grass.
Elena watched without moving.
When she had first entered the estate, its flawless appearance had seemed unsettling rather than peaceful.

Everything had been immaculate, controlled, and strangely quiet.
Now children’s toys lay scattered across the lawn.
A bicycle rested beside the fountain.
Small sneakers were stained with dirt.
And 2 little boys were running freely through the same grounds where, only months earlier, they had struggled to walk.
As evening approached, Elena returned to the old upstairs corridor.
The damaged section of the wall remained exposed.
The narrow ventilation grille had been permanently removed.
Lucas came up behind her.
“Elena.”
“What is it?”
“Is the house better now?”
She bent down until their eyes were level.
“Houses don’t heal the way people do.”
“Then what did they do to it?”
Elena glanced toward the opening that had once concealed the dangerous device.
“They opened it up to discover what it was hiding.”
Lucas considered her explanation for a moment.
Then he smiled and hurried away to join his brother.
Elena stayed where she was.
She had come to the estate expecting to care for 2 seriously ill children.
Instead, she had helped an entire household confront something much harder than a medical mystery.
She had shown them the danger of silence.
The consequences of fear.
And the harm caused when people stop questioning those who appear to possess all the answers.
Threats don’t always announce themselves by forcing their way through the front entrance.
Sometimes they have already been inside for years.
Hidden behind loyalty.
Protected by intimidation.
And overlooked because everyone has been taught that certain people must never be questioned.
Sometimes the discovery of a devastating truth begins with something almost insignificant.
An ordinary question.
An unfamiliar smell.
A small ventilation grille.
And a woman dismissed as “domestic staff” who noticed what more than €3,000,000 worth of medical investigations had failed to uncover.
