I Hired a Fake Boyfriend to Impress My Ex at a Pool Party, but His Shocking Actions Left Everyone Completely Speechless

    aliceBy aliceJuly 28, 2026No Comments11 Mins Read

I hired a professional actor to pose as my boyfriend after my ex told me he planned to bring the younger woman he had left me for to our son’s pool party. The second he spotted us together, he laughed out loud—but only moments later, one small gift box wiped that grin off his face in front of everyone. The house felt strangely quiet that morning.

It reminded me how twenty years of shared memories could vanish into emptiness. My fingers traced the kitchen counter where Jordan used to set his coffee mug every single morning.

    Four children.

    One marriage.

One future I had believed would last forever.

I reached for an old framed photograph resting on the shelf.

For a long moment, I looked at the woman smiling beside the man she trusted with all her heart. “Mom, are you crying again?”

My oldest daughter stood in the doorway, her hair pulled back, worry written all over her face.

    “I’m fine, sweetheart. Just remembering.”

    “You always say that.”

I placed the picture back on the shelf and forced a smile that felt heavier than ever. “Because it’s always true. Now come help me. Your brother has a thousand ideas for this pool party, and I need backup.”

She crossed the room and wrapped me in a hug.

For a few seconds, I let myself sink into the comfort.

Then my son rushed into the kitchen waving a crumpled guest list.

“Mom, I want everyone there. The whole family, my friends from school, the neighbors. Everyone.” “It’s my fifteenth birthday. It’s important.”

The excitement in his voice reminded me of the boy he had been before the divorce changed everything.

    “Then everyone it is.”

He paused before asking the question that hit me like a rock in my chest.

“He’s still your father. Of course.”

    My son slowly nodded.

“Okay. Thanks, Mom… Do you think he’ll actually come?”

    I couldn’t answer.

Ever since leaving us for his mistress, Jordan had missed far too many moments in our children’s lives.

My son nodded anyway before hurrying off, still holding tightly to his list.

    My daughter stayed behind.

She watched me the same way she watched dark storm clouds rolling across the ocean.

“You know he might bring her. If he comes.”

    “I know.”

The truth was, I wasn’t prepared.

I hadn’t been prepared since the day I stood in our bedroom holding our six-month-old baby while Jordan calmly tore our marriage apart.

“I’m with Percy now. We’ve been together for over a year. I don’t want to waste any more time on a woman who’s no longer attractive to me.”

I could still remember the baby shifting against my shoulder.

I remembered locking my knees so I wouldn’t fall apart.

I forced myself back into the present.

“I’m okay, honey. Really. Your brother deserves a perfect day, and I’m going to give it to him.”

    “Promise?”

She kissed my cheek before walking away.

I was alone again, mentally checking through the decorations, food, shopping, and everything else that still had to be arranged while pretending my heart wasn’t falling apart.

First, I needed to invite Jordan.

    I sent him a text.

“Ethan wants the whole family there.”

Not long after, my phone vibrated.

    Jordan.

Just seeing his name made my stomach twist.

    His response was brief.

    Cold.

I read it over several times before the meaning truly sank in.

    My chest grew tight.

I laid my phone on the counter and stared out toward the swimming pool, fighting to catch my breath.

    “Mom, are you okay?”

Ethan stood in the doorway, his wet hair dripping onto his T-shirt.

    I smiled for his sake.

He studied me a little longer than I wanted.

Then he quietly walked back outside.

That single look shattered something inside me.

I couldn’t let Jordan show up with Percy and make me look like the abandoned wife in front of my children and every neighbor who had watched our family grow for more than twenty years. I opened my laptop.

For the first time in my life, I searched for a fake boyfriend.

A talent agency downtown responded within the hour.

The woman on the phone sounded completely professional.

As if hiring someone to pretend to love you was something people did every day.

“Just for a few hours,” I explained. “He doesn’t have to do much. Just stand beside me. Smile.”

“Of course. He’ll play whatever role you need.”

After ending the call, I placed both hands on the kitchen counter.

Somehow, I had become the woman paying a stranger to make it appear as though she was still wanted.

    —

We met at a coffee shop the afternoon before the party.

I arrived early, ordered nothing, and tore apart a paper napkin while waiting.

When Clark walked in, I instinctively looked behind him, certain someone that attractive had to be meeting someone else.

He was tall, dark-haired, with warm brown eyes and the effortless confidence of someone who belonged in commercials.

He sat across from me and held out his hand with a relaxed smile.

    “You must be my client.”

    He waited quietly.

“Look at you,” I whispered. “Nobody is going to believe you’re with someone like me. My ex-husband will laugh in my face. He’ll know.”

“What do you do for a living?” Clark asked.

The question completely caught me off guard.

“I raised four children while he built his career. I managed the house. I held everything together while he cheated on me for a year.”

    Clark nodded slowly.

“So you kept an entire family together while a grown man lied to you every day. That isn’t weakness. That’s the kind of person anyone would be proud to stand beside.”

    Heat rushed into my cheeks.

I looked down at the destroyed napkin.

“You’re being paid to say things like that.”

“I’m being paid to act like your boyfriend for one afternoon,” he said. “I’m saying that right now because I mean it.”

    A soft laugh escaped me.

It was the first real laugh I’d had in weeks.

“He’s bringing his mistress, Clark. Percy. She’s ten years younger than me and looks like she walked straight off a runway. And he texted me saying she’s part of his family now.”

“And what did that feel like when you read it?”

“Like he was trying to erase me.”

Clark gently set his coffee down.

    “You don’t have to disappear.”

    I looked into his eyes.

There was nothing fake about the way he said it.

“I don’t know how to do this,” I admitted.

“You don’t have to do anything,” he replied. “Just stand beside me. Smile at your children. Enjoy your son’s birthday. I’ll handle the rest.”

I thought about Ethan watching me that morning.

I thought about the baby I once held.

I thought about twenty years of believing my marriage was secure.

    Finally, I nodded.

    “Okay. Saturday. Two o’clock.”

    Clark smiled.

For the first time since the divorce, a little hope quietly returned.

I had no idea my children were planning something themselves.

Or that one small gift box would change everything.

    —

Music drifted through the backyard as children played in the pool and guests laughed around the patio.

Clark stayed naturally by my side.

    He played his role effortlessly.

    Almost too effortlessly.

I kept looking toward the gate.

Ethan suddenly appeared holding a neatly wrapped present.

    He looked seriously at Clark.

“When Dad gets here, can you give this to him? It’s from us kids.”

Clark glanced at me before taking it.

    “Sure, Ethan. Whatever you need.”

I almost asked what was inside.

    But Ethan was already gone.

At that exact moment, the front gate opened.

Jordan walked in confidently with one hand placed on Percy’s back.

She wore a designer dress that probably cost more than I spent on groceries in a month.

The conversations around us grew quieter.

“There she is,” Jordan called with a grin. “The birthday boy’s mother.”

    I slowly inhaled.

Clark’s hand rested gently against my back, steadying me.

    “Jordan,” I said calmly. “Percy.”

Percy gave me a polite nod while casually looking around the backyard.

    Then Jordan noticed Clark.

He looked him up and down once.

    Then again.

    Suddenly, he laughed.

    Loudly.

    Cruelly.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” he said, wiping away imaginary tears. “Him? With you?”

    “Jordan, please.”

“No, seriously.” He pointed toward Clark. “A man like this. Have you even looked at yourself in the mirror lately? Come on.”

    Heat rushed over my face.

Percy covered her smile behind her wine glass.

I wanted the ground to swallow me.

    Clark stayed completely calm.

Without answering the insult, he picked up Ethan’s wrapped gift from the table and held it out toward Jordan.

“Funny,” he said quietly. “You spent years judging people by their appearance. Your children judged you by something much harder to fake.”

    He extended the package.

    Jordan’s laughter disappeared instantly.

    He stared at it.

“Go ahead,” Clark said. “Open it.”

    Percy leaned closer.

The nearby conversations faded into silence.

Jordan took the gift with a smirk.

He ripped away the wrapping and opened the box.

Immediately, all the color drained from his face.

His fingers gripped the cardboard tightly.

    “What is this?”

He pulled out an old photograph.

Ethan proudly sitting on his shoulders at a county fair years ago.

    Then another.

Then a pile of handmade Father’s Day cards.

    Bright crayon drawings.

    Finally came printed screenshots.

“Dad, are you coming to my game?”

    “Dad, please answer.”

Months and months of unanswered messages.

At the bottom was a folded note written by Ethan.

    Jordan opened it.

    Then he exploded.

“You put him up to this?” he shouted, turning toward me. “You. You did this.” “I didn’t,” I replied. “This wasn’t me, Jordan.”

Percy gently pulled on his sleeve.

“Jordan, just let it go. People are staring.”

    “Shut up, Percy.”

    She froze.

    Something shifted in her expression.

She quietly picked up Ethan’s note and read it aloud.

“Since Percy is your real family now, we thought you’d want these memories back.”

The entire backyard went silent except for the sound of the pool filter running.

She stared at Jordan for several long moments.

Then she slowly shook her head.

“I don’t want to be the woman standing beside a father who ignores his own children.”

She removed the bracelet Jordan had given her, set it on top of the gift box, and walked out through the gate without saying another word.

I watched my ex-husband, the man I had loved for twenty years, and felt something finally release inside my chest.

    But he wasn’t done.

“Ethan,” he yelled. “Ethan, get over here.”

Ethan stayed on the diving board with his arms crossed.

“You will obey me! Or else, I’ll—”

“Don’t you dare,” I cut in, stepping between them. “You don’t get to raise your voice at these children. Not after everything.”

    “They’re my kids too!”

Only then did Jordan notice that every neighbor was watching.

    Every guest had fallen silent.

    “Get off my property, Jordan.”

    He opened his mouth.

    Then decided against it.

He walked away, leaving the gift box behind.

Someone near the grill quietly whispered something.

Another neighbor slowly shook their head.

For the first time in months, I could breathe again.

Clark was still standing beside me.

    His role was technically over.

    Yet he hadn’t left.

    Our hands touched.

    Neither of us pulled away.

    Ethan rushed over.

    “I’m better than okay, sweetheart.”

Clark waited until the conversations around us slowly started again.

    Then he smiled.

“Looks like my contract officially ended five minutes ago.”

    I laughed.

    He looked at me carefully.

“Only if you want me to.”

    My cheeks grew warm.

“I spent months believing no decent man could ever look at me the way you pretended to today.”

    Clark smiled.

    “What?”

“I wasn’t pretending nearly as much as you think.”

For a moment, I could only look at him.

He rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly seeming much less like the confident actor everyone had seen.

I glanced toward the gate where Jordan had vanished.

One man had spent years making me believe I no longer mattered.

The other had spent one afternoon showing me that I still did.

    I smiled.

Clark offered me his arm with an exaggerated gesture.

Laughing, I slipped my arm through his.

For the first time in a very long time, my happiness wasn’t an act anymore.
