PART 2

Álvaro sat alone to listen to the recording.

His mother’s voice was unmistakable, calm and controlled.

“I’ll give you €80,000, and you disappear from this house.”

A moment later, Nora answered.

“I don’t want your money.”

“Don’t be naive. You could start over, finish your studies, and live comfortably for several years without worrying.”

“Martina isn’t my ticket out of here.”

There was a short pause before Isabel continued.

“Then I’ll report that you’ve been performing physical exercises with my granddaughter without completing your degree.”

“I’ve never claimed to be a physiotherapist. Martina has licensed professionals treating her. I follow their instructions.”

“You can explain that to a judge.”

Nora challenged her.

“Are you threatening me?”

“I’m offering you an opportunity. People like you don’t get opportunities like this twice.”

Nora’s response came without hesitation.

“Martina isn’t an opportunity. She’s a child.”

Álvaro stopped the audio.

He was ashamed of his mother’s behavior.

But an even more painful realization followed.

He was ashamed of himself.

Isabel had attempted to purchase Nora’s departure.

Yet Álvaro himself had installed 7 hidden cameras and treated someone caring for his daughter as though she needed to be watched continuously.

That afternoon, he contacted his attorney.

He withdrew Isabel’s powers of attorney across several family businesses, formally separated decisions involving Martina from corporate management, and prevented his mother from exercising financial authority on his behalf.

He also canceled her unrestricted permission to enter his property.

Thirty minutes later, Isabel arrived.

“Have you lost your mind?”

Álvaro placed the recording device in front of her.

“I heard everything.”

She made no attempt to act surprised.

“I did what was necessary.”

“You offered her €80,000.”

“So she would leave.”

“I already know that.”

“That woman was making herself indispensable. You were vulnerable. Martina was obsessed with her.”

Álvaro then revealed the report prepared for the board.

“And what about this?”

Isabel’s expression shifted.

“You haven’t been the same since Clara died.”

“Of course I haven’t been the same.”

“You make emotional decisions. You cancel meetings, refuse the residential facility, and allow an employee to influence your daughter…”

“So you wanted to prove that I’m incapable of running my own affairs?”

“I wanted to protect what we’ve built.”

Álvaro looked straight at her.

“I built that company.”

Color drained from Isabel’s face.

“After everything I’ve done for you…”

“That’s exactly the problem. You’ve spent my entire life calling it protection whenever you make decisions for other people.”

Their disagreement became increasingly heated.

Neither adult noticed Martina listening from the hallway.

The child attempted to move her wheelchair toward her father without assistance.

One wheel became caught against the edge of a carpet.

She fell.

The impact immediately silenced the house.

Álvaro rushed to her.

“Martina!”

She remained conscious, although she was frightened and hurting.

They took her directly to the emergency department.

Doctors found no significant fractures, but the pediatrician responsible for monitoring Martina’s recovery requested a private conversation with Álvaro.

“Physically, she’s stable. It’s her emotional well-being that concerns me more.”

“Ever since Nora left, she barely wants to do anything.”

“Don’t turn Nora into some kind of miracle treatment.”

“I’m not.”

“But don’t underestimate their bond, either. Your daughter lost her mother, part of her mobility, her familiar routine, and now another person who made her feel safe.”

Through the glass, Álvaro could see Martina repeatedly turning toward the doorway.

She appeared to be waiting for someone.

Isabel arrived shortly afterward.

“See? She needs that facility.”

Álvaro turned.

“No.”

“Adrián…”

“Álvaro.”

His mother stopped speaking.

He continued.

“You’re not even listening to what the doctor just said. Martina didn’t fall because she doesn’t have enough specialists. She fell trying to reach me while we argued about her life as though she couldn’t hear us.”

“She needs stability.”

“Yes.”

“Then let me help you.”

“Helping doesn’t mean making every decision.”

He moved closer.

“And you will not use my daughter as an excuse to regain power in my company.”

Isabel stood without responding.

Álvaro returned to his daughter’s bedside.

That evening, he decided he had to find Nora.

Her employment records listed a rented room in Vallecas.

However, the property owner explained that Nora had moved out 2 days earlier after falling several months behind on rent.

Álvaro contacted previous employers, charitable organizations, and people involved with support programs for children.

Eventually, a social worker provided information that helped him locate her.

Nora was temporarily living in accommodation operated by a nonprofit association.

Álvaro went there without anyone accompanying him.

He found her seated beside a window, holding a child’s drawing.

Three figures stood in front of a rocket.

He recognized Martina’s uneven lines immediately.

“She’s in the hospital.”

Nora lifted her head.

“What happened?”

Álvaro told her about the fall.

She immediately rose.

“Is she okay?”

“She doesn’t have any serious injuries.”

Nora visibly relaxed.

“Then why have you come?”

Álvaro remained where he stood.

“Because I owe you the truth.”

She waited for him to continue.

“On the night of the accident, I was supposed to be driving.”

His hands began trembling.

“Clara asked me to leave a meeting. I was closing a €38,000,000 deal. I told her I couldn’t leave.”

Nora listened silently.

“I asked her to drive home alone with Martina.”

Álvaro bowed his head.

“For 9 months, I’ve kept thinking that if I’d been there, maybe I could have prevented everything.”

“You can’t know that.”

“I know that in my head.”

“But you don’t feel it.”

“No.”

He sat down.

“That’s why I installed the cameras. That’s why I control the cars, doctors, schedules, and doors. If I know where Martina is every second, I feel as though nothing bad can happen.”

Nora glanced at the drawing in her hands.

“You were trying to prevent another loss, and you ended up creating a house where nobody could breathe without being watched.”

Álvaro nodded.

“Yes.”

He didn’t attempt to defend his actions.

“I’ve ordered the cameras to be removed.”

“That doesn’t undo what you did.”

“I know.”

“Then what do you want?”

“I didn’t come here to get an employee back.”

Nora looked up.

“I came to ask whether you might someday be willing to return for Martina. With a proper contract, clearly defined responsibilities, and qualified professionals supervising any physical activities.”

Before Nora could respond, Álvaro’s phone began ringing.

The hospital was calling.

Martina had been crying for over 20 minutes, repeatedly asking for Nora.

Nora immediately reached for her coat.

When they entered Martina’s hospital room, Isabel was standing beside the bed.

“You need to calm down. Nora doesn’t work here anymore.”

Then Martina noticed the doorway.

“Nora!”

Nora hurried toward her.

Martina wrapped both arms around her.

“You left me.”

“I left because I was angry with the adults.”

“Not with me.”

“Never with you.”

“Don’t leave again.”

Nora stroked her hair.

“Just breathe for now.”

Gradually, Martina’s crying subsided.

The neurologist arrived with the pediatrician to examine her.

Throughout the assessment, Martina continued gripping Nora’s hand.

Then something unexpected happened.

Beneath the blanket, Martina’s right foot shifted slightly.

Álvaro went still.

“Did you see that?”

The neurologist requested silence and repeated several stimuli.

Martina moved some of her toes again.

Álvaro covered his mouth.

Isabel began crying.

But Nora interrupted their reactions.

“Don’t turn this into a promise.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“It might be significant, or it might be a limited movement. Martina doesn’t need every small improvement to become an expectation that she must walk.”

She leaned toward Martina.

“Listen to me. You are worth exactly the same whether you run down this hallway one day or use a wheelchair for the rest of your life.”

Martina smiled.

Isabel lowered herself into a chair beside the hospital bed.

For once, she seemed unable to find words.

For months, she had spoken endlessly about rehabilitation centers, overseas specialists, and percentages predicting possible recovery.

She had begun viewing her granddaughter as a condition that needed solving.

Now she looked at Martina differently.

“Martina…”

“What?”

Isabel inhaled slowly.

“Forgive me.”

“Why?”

“Because I’ve made too many decisions about your life without asking what you want.”

Martina frowned.

“I don’t like that facility.”

Álvaro almost smiled.

Isabel closed her eyes.

“I know.”

Then she faced Nora.

“I owe you an apology, too.”

“I don’t need a beautiful apology.”

Isabel nodded.

“I understand.”

“If you really want to change, do it when nobody is watching.”

Isabel remained silent.

When Martina was finally discharged, Álvaro followed through on his promise.

A technician removed all 7 surveillance cameras and carefully checked the property for any remaining concealed recording equipment.

Nora watched the final camera being placed in a box.

“Taking them down is easy.”

“Yes.”

“The difficult part will be learning to stop watching everyone in your mind.”

Álvaro managed a weary smile.

“That will take longer.”

Nora eventually agreed to resume working with Martina, but only under specific conditions.

She would receive a formal contract, fixed working hours, and clearly outlined duties.

Any medical procedures would remain the responsibility of qualified healthcare personnel.

Irene, Martina’s licensed physiotherapist, would supervise her rehabilitation program.

Nora also wanted to complete her university education.

Álvaro offered financial assistance.

“No.”

“I can afford it.”

“That’s not the problem.”

“Then consider it a scholarship.”

“No to that, too.”

They ultimately agreed to arrange a formally documented loan without interest.

“I don’t want my future to depend on the goodwill of a wealthy family again.”

Álvaro respected her decision.

And although Nora had returned, Martina’s recovery was far from a simple story with an effortless happy ending.

There would still be difficult days, painful setbacks, and moments when progress seemed to disappear.

But this time, Martina would face them surrounded by people learning to listen rather than control.
