PART 2

She turned to leave.

Richard stopped her.

“And bring the wine immediately.”

“Yes, sir.”

She walked away.

Behind her, Richard lowered his voice.

Laurent heard him.

“She seems competent.”

Richard laughed.

“She’s a waitress.”

Laurent looked at him.

“That does not mean she isn’t competent.”

Richard smiled.

“Of course.”

But his tone said something else.

Amara returned with the water.

Then the wine.

Then the first course.

Throughout dinner, Richard did most of the talking.

He talked about investments.

He talked about acquisitions.

He talked about his company.

And repeatedly, he talked about Laurent as though Laurent needed him.

“We can make this deal happen,” Richard said.

“You need my distribution network,” Laurent replied.

“And you need American capital.”

Laurent took a sip of wine.

“I need trustworthy partners.”

Richard smiled.

“You have one.”

Amara happened to be clearing a plate when he said it.

She said nothing.

She simply continued working.

Twenty minutes later, Laurent opened the contract.

Richard watched him closely.

“You don’t need to read every line.”

Laurent looked up.

“I always read every line.”

“It’s a standard agreement.”

“In French and English.”

“Exactly.”

Laurent smiled faintly.

“Then it should be easy.”

Richard laughed.

“You’re overthinking it.”

Amara returned with another bottle.

She noticed the pages.

Not because she was trying to listen.

Because she recognized the structure.

She recognized the legal terminology.

And she recognized the type of clause Richard was pointing toward.

She said nothing.

Then came the hundred-dollar bill.

Then the insult.

Then the challenge.

And then the word Richard had desperately hoped nobody would translate.

After Laurent understood it, the atmosphere at the table changed completely.

He turned another page.

Then another.

“Richard.”

“Yes?”

“Where is the amendment?”

Richard’s face tightened.

“What amendment?”

“The one concerning voting rights.”

“There is no amendment.”

Laurent looked at Amara.

“Miss Lewis, please.”

Amara hesitated.

“Sir?”

“Would you read the paragraph beneath the signature section?”

Richard immediately interrupted.

“You don’t need to do that.”

Laurent looked at him.

“I asked her.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

Amara picked up the contract.

She read the paragraph.

Then stopped.

“There is a reference to an attached schedule.”

Laurent’s expression hardened.

“I was not given a schedule.”

Richard’s voice became defensive.

“It is administrative.”

Laurent looked at him.

“Administrative?”

“Yes.”

“Then why is it referenced in the controlling language?”

Richard had no answer.

Laurent stood.

The chair moved backward with a quiet scrape against the floor.

“I will not sign this.”

Richard’s face turned red.

“You’re misunderstanding the structure.”

“No.”

Laurent held up the contract.

“You attempted to transfer control of my company.”

Richard lowered his voice.

“Not control.”

“Voting rights.”

“That is not the same thing.”

Laurent stared at him.

“It is when the voting rights determine control.”

Silence.

Amara stood a few feet away.

She didn’t smile.

She didn’t gloat.

She simply waited.

Richard turned toward her.

“You.”

Amara looked at him.

“You deliberately interfered.”

She frowned.

“I only translated what you asked me to translate.”

“You knew exactly what you were doing.”

“I read the words.”

“You embarrassed me.”

Amara’s voice remained steady.

“I didn’t write the contract.”

Richard stepped toward her.

Laurent immediately said:

“Richard.”

Richard stopped.

Laurent’s tone was cold.

“You humiliated her because you assumed she was beneath you.”

Richard shook his head.

“This has nothing to do with that.”

“It has everything to do with it.”

Laurent glanced toward the hundred-dollar bill still lying near Amara’s shoes.

“You threw money at her.”

Richard looked away.

Laurent continued.

“And then you insulted her.”

Richard said nothing.

“You believed she would be too embarrassed to challenge you.”

Amara finally spoke.

“I wasn’t embarrassed.”

Both men looked at her.

She continued:

“I was disappointed.”

Richard scoffed.

“In me?”

“In the assumption that my job tells you what I know.”

Laurent gave a faint nod.

Richard looked toward the door.

“I’m leaving.”

Laurent picked up his coat.

“So am I.”

Richard stopped.

“Étienne.”

Laurent walked past him.

“I will have my attorneys review everything.”

Richard followed.

“You’re overreacting.”

Laurent stopped at the doorway.

“No.”

He glanced back at the table.

“I am finally reacting.”

Then he left.

Richard followed him.

The private room became quiet.

Amara stood alone beside Table Twelve.

A few seconds later, her manager, Elena Brooks, appeared.

She had seen enough from the hallway to understand that something serious had happened.

“Amara?”

“I’m okay.”

Elena looked toward the contract.

“What happened?”

Amara explained.

Elena listened.

When she finished, Elena looked at the hundred-dollar bill.

Then she looked at Amara.

“Did he really throw that at you?”

“Yes.”

Elena picked it up.

She held it out.

Amara shook her head.

“No.”

“You earned a tip.”

“Not like that.”

Elena understood.

She put the bill in an envelope.

“We’ll return it.”

The following morning, Amara arrived at work expecting an uncomfortable conversation.

Instead, Elena called her into the office.

There was another person waiting.

The restaurant’s owner.

He had already spoken with Laurent’s legal team.

And they had asked a very specific question.

“Who translated that contract?”

Elena pointed toward Amara.
