AFTER HAVING FOUR DAUGHTERS, MY HUSBAND FINALLY GOT THE SON HE HAD BEEN LONGING FOR. BUT THE MOMENT HE HELD OUR NEWBORN BABY BOY FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT HE SAID MADE MY STOMACH SINK.

PART 2

It took me more than an hour to mail the genetic samples because I sat in the post office parking lot, the sealed envelope resting in my lap as I trembled uncontrollably.

Waiting for the results was the most agonizing part of the entire ordeal. During those silent nights, I replayed every interaction I had ever shared with Gavin. I remembered the neighborhood pool party two summers earlier and the casual cups of coffee at my kitchen counter while Brandon worked late shifts.

On the fourth afternoon of my stay, the doorbell suddenly rang. Gavin stood on Natalie’s front porch, holding a large plush teddy bear beneath his arm.

Seeing him brought back a vivid memory of Brandon’s father’s funeral three years earlier. Gavin had stood several feet behind our family as guests passed by the casket, looking deeply troubled. He remained after almost everyone else had left, staring intently at the polished wood of the casket. When I asked whether he was holding up alright, he simply murmured that he had known Brandon’s father for a very long time. I had assumed he meant through his friendship with Brandon.

“Laura, what on earth is going on?” Gavin asked, his face filled with genuine concern. “Brandon blocked my phone number completely, and I have no idea what I did wrong.”

I clutched the wooden doorframe, struggling to remain steady on my feet. “I really cannot talk about this with you right now, Gavin.”

His expression fell as he examined my pale face. “Is everything okay with the baby?”

“We are doing fine,” I answered quietly. “We just need some time right now.”

Gavin gently placed the teddy bear on the top porch step before returning to his car. Natalie came to stand behind me, watching his vehicle disappear down the street.

“You did not explain the situation to him,” Natalie observed gently.

“He deserves to hear the accusation directly from Brandon, not from me,” I replied softly.

Exactly one week after I sent the swabs, the official laboratory report appeared in my email inbox. Sitting at Natalie’s kitchen table, I opened the PDF on my phone, my hands surprisingly steady. The official statement at the bottom read: ‘Probability of paternity: 99.99%.’

An overwhelming wave of relief washed over me, only to be replaced almost immediately by intense anger. A week earlier, I would have called Brandon without hesitation, cried into the phone, and begged him to come get us so we could put this nightmare behind us.

My thumb lingered over his number on the screen. Then I suddenly remembered him wrenching his wrist away from me in the hospital room and refusing to look back as he walked out.

I would never beg him again.

I forwarded the official report directly to Brandon’s email without adding a subject line or writing a single word. Less than an hour later, his truck pulled up outside Natalie’s house.

I opened the front door and stood resolutely in the doorway, keeping my body between him and the entrance.

“Laura,” Brandon choked out, his voice breaking immediately as tears streamed down his face. “Laura, I am so sorry. I am so deeply sorry for everything.”

“You reviewed the document,” I said coldly.

“I saw it,” he sobbed, stepping toward the porch. “I read the official results four times.”

“Good,” I replied.

“Please let me hold my son,” Brandon pleaded, his hands shaking. “Please let us go home and fix this.”

I looked at him without budging. “Brandon, I want you to answer one question for me honestly.”

“I will answer anything you ask,” he promised desperately.

“Why does our newborn son have Gavin’s exact birthmark?” I asked.

Brandon’s face went completely blank, and every emotional apology he had evidently rehearsed during the drive over died in his throat. “I want you to call Gavin right now,” I said firmly.

“What?” Brandon asked, blinking in bewilderment.

“You heard me,” I repeated. “Call him on your phone right now.”

“Laura, I do not even know what question I am supposed to be asking him,” Brandon stammered.

“Then start by asking him about the birthmark,” I replied.

When he faltered, I extended my hand and said, “Give me your phone.”

That finally prompted him to act. Brandon took his cell phone out of his pocket, unblocked Gavin’s contact, and made the call on speaker. Gavin answered on the third ring.

“Brandon?” Gavin asked, his voice heavy with concern. “Is everything okay?”

“That birthmark on your back,” Brandon said, his voice trembling slightly. “Where exactly did you get it?”

An intense, complete silence lingered on the other end of the line for several seconds before Gavin released a long, ragged breath. “Is your wife there with you?”

I met Brandon’s eyes and whispered, “Tell him yes.”

“Yes, Laura is right here with me,” Brandon confirmed into the phone.

Another painful silence followed before Gavin finally spoke. “You both need to come over to my house right now.”

An hour later, Natalie remained behind to look after our children while Brandon and I sat across from Gavin at his kitchen table.

Gavin looked directly into Brandon’s eyes and said, “My biological father was your father too.”

Brandon froze completely, his eyes widening with utter shock. “What did you just say?”

“My biological father was your father,” Gavin repeated quietly. “Our father had the exact same crescent birthmark in the exact same spot on his back.”

“How long have you known about this?” I asked, breaking the stunned silence.

“Since I was seventeen years old,” Gavin admitted, lowering his gaze to his hands.

Brandon stared at his best friend in disbelief. “You knew all these years that we were brothers?”

Gavin slowly nodded. “Your father knew the truth as well, Laura.”

“And he forced you to keep it a secret from Brandon?” I pressed.

“He made me promise never to tell,” Gavin explained, rubbing his face with both hands. “He said I could remain a part of Brandon’s life as a close friend, but never as a brother.”

“Even after he passed away?” I asked again.

Gavin looked up at Brandon, tears filling his eyes. “After our father died, you were the only real family I had left in the world. I had already kept the truth hidden from you for so many years, and I was terrified that if I confessed it then, you would hate me for lying and I would lose you forever.”

Brandon pushed his chair away from the table. “That is why you were acting so strange at his funeral.”

Gavin’s expression crumpled with grief. “I was burying my own father, Brandon, and I had to stand in the back of the room pretending he was just my friend’s dad.”

Brandon covered his face with both hands and released a shaky sigh. I watched them both for a moment before getting to my feet and putting on my coat.

Brandon looked up in alarm. “Laura, please wait.”

“You two have a lot of personal history to talk through,” I said calmly.

“Please do not leave,” Brandon pleaded, standing up from his chair.

“I got the exact answers I came here for,” I replied as I turned toward the front door.

Early the following morning, Brandon arrived at Natalie’s house, standing on the front porch with red, swollen eyes.

I answered the door, keeping one hand on the handle.

“Laura, I was completely wrong about everything,” Brandon begged, his voice breaking. “Please bring the kids and come back home with me. I will go to marriage counseling, I will do individual therapy, I will do whatever it takes.”

I glanced down the quiet hallway toward the bassinet where our newborn son slept peacefully, then turned my attention back to Brandon.

“No,” I said quietly.

“Laura, please do not do this,” he pleaded, reaching out to hold my hand.

I withdrew my hand before he could touch it. “A single birthmark was all it took for you to instantly believe I had betrayed you. My word meant nothing to you, and I had to send genetic samples to a lab just to prove my innocence to my own husband.”

“I was blinded by anger and I was not thinking clearly,” Brandon attempted to explain.

“I begged you to stay in that hospital room, Brandon,” I reminded him coldly. “And you walked out on me anyway.”

“I love you, Laura,” he whispered.

“You did not need any actual proof to condemn me,” I said softly. “You only needed proof to believe me, and I cannot build a future with a man who trusts me so little.”

Behind me, our baby boy began fussing softly in his bassinet. Brandon called my name one final time, but I turned away from him and walked toward my son.

For years, keeping Brandon satisfied had seemed much easier than confronting his disappointment. I had pushed aside my own wishes, agreed to another pregnancy, and made myself smaller simply to preserve our family. But somewhere between the cold hospital room where he abandoned me and the doorway where I finally said no, something fundamental had changed within me. I understood that protecting my children did not mean sacrificing my own dignity.

I lifted my baby boy into my arms and walked farther into the house without turning around, choosing myself for the very first time.

THE END.
