PART 2

But Ethan had treated her as though she were uninterested.

There was a difference.

And he had failed to understand it until now.

“Declan approached you?”

“Pierce Global approached multiple shareholders.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

“And you’ve been negotiating with him behind my back for three months?”

Grace’s expression hardened.

“You spent eight months sleeping with another woman behind mine.”

Ethan flinched.

There it was.

Not shouted.

Not dramatized.

Simply stated.

He walked toward the window.

The Atlantic stretched endlessly beyond the glass.

“What do you want?”

Grace stared at him.

“A clean transaction.”

“I mean from me.”

“I know.”

She paused.

“I want a divorce.”

The words seemed strangely small inside the enormous room.

Ethan turned.

“No.”

Grace blinked.

“No?”

“We’re not getting divorced.”

A faint disbelief appeared in her expression.

“You don’t get to veto it.”

“We’re having a child.”

“I am having a child.”

“Our child.”

“Yes.”

“And you think you’re going to destroy our family because of Vanessa?”

Grace stared at him.

“You already made that decision.”

“I made a mistake.”

“A mistake?”

“Yes.”

Grace laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“A mistake is sending an email to the wrong person.”

“Grace.”

“A mistake is missing an exit.”

“Stop.”

“Eight months is a schedule.”

He looked away.

Grace continued.

“You booked trips.”

“You created lies.”

“You invented conferences.”

“You bought gifts.”

“You rented an apartment.”

“You brought her here.”

“While I was seven months pregnant.”

Each sentence landed quietly.

Precisely.

Ethan suddenly wished she would scream.

Screaming he understood.

This calmness was unbearable.

“I love you.”

Grace closed her eyes.

For one second, the composure broke.

Only one.

When she opened them again, they were wet.

“I wish you hadn’t said that.”

“Why?”

“Because I spent eight months hoping there was some explanation that would hurt less than knowing you could love me and still choose to do this.”

Ethan stepped toward her.

She stepped back.

That movement stopped him.

“I can end it with Vanessa.”

Grace shook her head.

“This isn’t about Vanessa anymore.”

“Then what is it about?”

“Me.”

He stared at her.

“For eight years, I built my life around yours.”

“I defended you.”

“I attended dinners I hated.”

“I smiled beside you for photographs.”

“I moved twice because your company needed you somewhere else.”

“I gave you access to people who trusted my father.”

“I voted with you even when I had doubts.”

“I believed we were building something together.”

Her voice trembled now.

“And somewhere along the way, you decided that meant I would never leave.”

Ethan said nothing.

“You were wrong.”

A knock came at the door.

Grace picked up her coat.

“Wait.”

She paused.

“Please.”

Again.

That word.

Grace looked at him.

“What happens now?”

“To us?”

“To everything.”

“The board meets tomorrow morning.”

“And our marriage?”

“My attorney will send your attorney the filing.”

“Grace.”

“I won’t interfere with your relationship with our daughter.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Daughter?”

Grace froze.

He stared at her stomach.

“You said our daughter.”

She looked down.

For the first time that afternoon, Grace smiled.

It was tiny.

Sad.

But real.

“Yes.”

“You know?”

“I found out three weeks ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Grace looked at him.

“I came home that evening to tell you.”

His face changed.

She didn’t need to explain.

He remembered.

Three weeks earlier.

He had told Grace he had an emergency board dinner.

He had actually spent the night at Vanessa’s apartment.

Grace opened the door.

“I’ll make sure you’re informed about every appointment you’re entitled to attend.”

Then she walked out.

Ethan remained alone.

The next morning, Calloway Meridian’s board meeting began at eight.

By eight fifteen, Ethan understood just how badly he had misjudged the situation.

Pierce Global’s offer valued the company at forty-two percent above its previous closing price.

The proposal preserved the majority of the workforce.

It protected existing employee retirement obligations.

It guaranteed funding for three manufacturing expansions Ethan had postponed.

And it required changes to executive leadership.

Including his.

Ethan sat at the end of the table while twelve directors reviewed the documents.

Grace attended remotely.

She appeared on a screen from another room in the resort.

Declan was not beside her.

That surprised Ethan.

He had spent the entire night convincing himself that there had to be something between them.

Something personal.

Something that would allow him to transform himself from betrayer into betrayed.

But Grace was alone.

When the chairman asked her why she supported the offer, her answer was simple.

“Because I believe it protects the company better than the current strategy.”

Nothing about Ethan.

Nothing about Vanessa.

Nothing about revenge.

That hurt more.

The vote lasted eleven minutes.

Nine in favor.

Three opposed.

The board authorized negotiations.

Then came the second motion.

Temporary administrative leave for Ethan pending review of expense-account irregularities and undisclosed conflicts involving a senior executive.

Vanessa.

This vote was unanimous.

Including Ethan’s longtime allies.

He left the boardroom at nine twenty-seven.

Vanessa was waiting outside.

“What happened?”

He kept walking.

“Ethan.”

“We’re suspended.”

She followed him.

“What?”

“Administrative leave.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

She stopped.

“And Pierce?”

“The deal moves forward.”

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she asked the question Ethan should have expected.

“What happens to me?”

Not us.

Me.

He turned.

“I don’t know.”

Her face hardened.

“You said the board couldn’t touch you.”

“I was wrong.”

“You said Grace never paid attention to the company.”

“I was wrong.”

“You said her shares didn’t matter.”

“I know.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“What about the apartment?”

Ethan stared at her.

“The apartment?”

“You said the lease was covered through next year.”

In that moment, something inside him finally collapsed.

Eight months.

Hundreds of lies.

His marriage.

Possibly his company.

And Vanessa was asking about an apartment.

He almost laughed.

Instead, he said, “Talk to your attorney.”

Then he walked away.

Grace returned home two days later.

Not to Ethan.

To the house.

Their house.

Ethan arrived that evening and found two black suitcases waiting beside the front door.

Grace was in the kitchen.

She wore loose gray pants and a white sweater.

No makeup.

Bare feet.

She looked more like the woman he had married than she had at the resort.

And somehow that made it harder.

“Those mine?”

“Yes.”

“You packed my things?”

“Only enough for several weeks. The rest can be handled later.”

“Where am I supposed to go?”

Grace looked at him.

“You own three apartments.”

He almost argued.

Then remembered that she knew about every account.

Every property.

Every transfer.

Everything.

“I ended it with Vanessa.”

Grace continued pouring tea.

“I assumed you would.”

“She means nothing to me.”

Grace’s hand stopped.

Then she placed the kettle down.

“Do you understand how cruel that sounds?”

Ethan frowned.

“If she meant nothing, then you destroyed our marriage for nothing.”

He had no answer.

Grace picked up her cup.

“The petition was filed this afternoon.”

His face tightened.

“You really did it.”

“Yes.”

“Without giving me a chance?”

Grace looked at him for a long time.

“Eight months was your chance.”

Ethan’s shoulders dropped.

He sat at the kitchen island.

“What am I supposed to tell our daughter someday?”

Grace’s expression softened.

“The truth appropriate for her age.”

“That her father cheated on her mother?”

“That her parents loved her.”

“Even when they couldn’t remain married.”

Ethan looked down.

“And when she’s older?”

“Then we tell her more.”

“We?”

“Yes.”

Grace’s voice became firm.

“Our marriage is ending.”

“Your fatherhood isn’t.”

That was the first mercy she had offered him.

And somehow, it nearly broke him.

The Pierce Global acquisition closed four months later.

Ethan fought parts of it.

Then negotiated.

Eventually, he resigned as chief executive in exchange for terms protecting his remaining equity and limiting further litigation over disputed corporate expenses.

Vanessa left the company.

Grace never asked where she went.

She didn’t care.

Pierce Global installed a new leadership team.

Calloway Meridian kept its name.

Most employees kept their jobs.

Two delayed factories received funding.

And the company Ethan had spent fifteen years building continued without him.

That lesson was nearly as painful as losing Grace.

He had believed himself indispensable.

He wasn’t.

Grace gave birth six weeks after the acquisition closed.

Their daughter arrived at 3:17 in the morning.

Seven pounds, two ounces.

Healthy.

Loud.

Perfect.

Grace named her Amelia Rose Calloway.

Ethan was at the hospital.

Grace had kept her promise.

When the nurse placed Amelia in his arms, Ethan cried harder than Grace had ever seen him cry.

“She has your nose,” he whispered.

Grace smiled tiredly.

“Poor thing.”

Ethan laughed through the tears.

For several minutes, there was no affair.

No acquisition.

No lawyers.

No divorce.

Just two exhausted people staring at the tiny person they had created.

Then Amelia wrapped her hand around Ethan’s finger.

His face crumpled.

“I’m sorry.”

Grace knew he wasn’t speaking to the baby.

She looked toward the window.

“I know.”

“I wish I could change it.”

“I know.”

“Is there really no chance?”

Grace was quiet.

Then she looked at him.

“No.”

He nodded.
