PART 1

Ethan Calloway was kissing another woman when his seven-month-pregnant wife entered the hotel lobby.

His hand was still resting against Vanessa Reed’s bare waist when Grace looked directly at him from twenty feet away.

But Grace didn’t scream.

She didn’t cry.

She didn’t even stop walking.

And somehow, her silence terrified Ethan more than anything else she could have done.

The lobby of the Halcyon Crown Resort shimmered beneath three-story windows overlooking the Atlantic.

White marble floors.

Champagne-gold chandeliers.

Palm trees bending in the breeze beyond the glass.

A string quartet playing softly near the terrace.

It was the kind of place where guests paid twelve thousand dollars a night to pretend the rest of the world had disappeared.

Ethan had chosen it for exactly that reason.

For four days, he had ignored calls from his office, told Grace he was attending a private investor conference in New York, and disappeared into a beachfront villa with Vanessa, his company’s thirty-two-year-old vice president of communications.

He had expected privacy.

He had expected room service.

He had expected Vanessa in the red silk dress she was wearing now.

He had not expected his wife.

And he absolutely had not expected the man walking beside her.

Declan Pierce.

Founder and CEO of Pierce Global Holdings.

Thirty-nine years old.

Estimated net worth: $11.4 billion.

One of the most aggressive corporate buyers in America.

The man who had once acquired a collapsing logistics empire on a Thursday and removed its entire executive leadership before Monday morning.

Declan wore a navy suit without a tie.

No security team was visible, although Ethan knew men like Pierce never traveled alone.

Grace moved beside him in a dark emerald maternity dress beneath a cream-colored coat.

Her golden-blonde hair fell in loose waves over one shoulder.

One hand rested beneath the curve of her stomach.

The other held a narrow black leather folder.

She appeared calm.

Almost serene.

As though finding her husband wrapped around his mistress in the lobby of a luxury island resort was no more troubling than inconvenient weather.

Vanessa reacted first.

Her hand snapped away from Ethan.

“Oh, my God.”

Ethan barely registered the words.

Grace’s gaze met his.

He searched her face for devastation.

There was none.

Anger?

Nothing.

Humiliation?

Not even that.

Then Grace turned slightly toward Declan.

“We have six minutes.”

Declan checked his watch.

“Five forty-eight.”

Grace nodded.

“Then we shouldn’t keep them waiting.”

And she walked directly past Ethan.

Simply passed him.

No accusation.

No slap.

No question.

Her perfume reached him for half a second.

Then she was gone.

Ethan turned.

“Grace.”

She kept walking.

“Grace.”

Nothing.

His voice sharpened.

“Grace!”

She stopped beside the elevators.

Declan stopped next to her.

Vanessa remained three steps behind Ethan, her face suddenly pale.

Grace turned slowly.

Ethan crossed the lobby toward her.

“What are you doing here?”

Grace glanced once toward Vanessa.

Not at her face.

At Ethan’s hand, which had only seconds earlier been resting against Vanessa’s waist.

Then she looked back at her husband.

“Working.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Working?”

“Yes.”

“On this island?”

“Yes.”

“With him?”

Grace glanced toward Declan.

“With Mr. Pierce and several other people, yes.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

He lowered his voice.

“You’re seven months pregnant.”

Grace’s expression did not change.

“I’m aware.”

“You shouldn’t be traveling.”

“My doctor disagreed.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“No?”

Her voice remained perfectly level.

For the first time, Ethan noticed the black folder in her hand again.

“What’s in there?”

Grace looked down at it.

“Documents.”

“What documents?”

The elevator doors opened.

Declan stepped aside, allowing Grace to enter first.

Ethan moved forward.

“Grace.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“Are you seriously going to walk away from me?”

For the first time, something almost resembling amusement touched her face.

“You seem to have managed quite well without me for four days.”

Vanessa inhaled sharply behind him.

Ethan’s face hardened.

“This isn’t the place.”

Grace glanced around the magnificent lobby.

“You chose the place.”

The elevator doors began closing.

Ethan reached out and stopped them.

Declan finally spoke.

“Mr. Calloway.”

His voice was quiet.

But Ethan immediately released the door.

Declan didn’t threaten him.

He didn’t need to.

Grace stepped farther into the elevator.

Ethan stared at her.

“We need to talk.”

“We will.”

“When?”

Grace looked at her watch.

“After I finish signing.”

Ethan felt something cold move through his stomach.

“Signing what?”

The doors closed.

Grace disappeared.

For several seconds, Ethan remained motionless.

Then Vanessa approached.

“What the hell was that?”

He turned toward her.

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know why your wife is here with Declan Pierce?”

“No.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Ethan, Pierce Global has been circling Calloway Meridian for months.”

“I know that.”

“Then why is your wife meeting with him?”

“I said I don’t know.”

Vanessa stared toward the elevators.

Then her expression changed.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“Grace owns shares.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Twenty-two percent.”

“No.”

“Twenty-two point eight.”

He knew the number.

Of course he knew the number.

Grace’s father had been one of Calloway Meridian’s earliest investors.

When he died, his shares passed to Grace.

Ethan had always treated them as irrelevant.

Grace rarely attended board meetings.

She never interfered with operations.

She signed routine shareholder documents when necessary and otherwise allowed Ethan to run the company.

For eight years, he had mistaken her silence for disinterest.

Vanessa was already reaching for her phone.

“Something’s happening.”

Ethan grabbed his own.

Twenty-three missed calls.

Eleven from his chief financial officer.

Seven from the chairman.

Three from outside counsel.

Two from his younger brother, Nathan.

Ethan opened the most recent message.

CALL ME NOW. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING.

His stomach dropped.

He called immediately.

The chairman answered before the first ring finished.

“Where are you?”

“At the Halcyon Crown.”

Silence.

Then:

“You’re there?”

“Yes.”

“Jesus Christ.”

“What’s happening?”

“Pierce Global submitted a revised acquisition proposal forty minutes ago.”

Ethan turned toward the elevators.

“What?”

“Cash and stock. Significant premium.”

“That doesn’t explain Grace.”

Another silence.

Then the chairman said, “Grace signed a voting agreement.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“With Pierce?”

“Yes.”

“For her entire position?”

“Yes.”

The lobby seemed to tilt.

“That still isn’t enough.”

“No.”

Ethan exhaled.

“Then why are you panicking?”

“Because the Whitmore trust signed too.”

His face went numb.

The chairman continued.

“And Northbridge.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Those three positions together represented enough voting power to force the board to consider the transaction.

Not automatically approve it.

But enough to change everything.

“How did this happen?”

“You tell me.”

“I’ve been unavailable for four days.”

“Yes, Ethan. We noticed.”

The words landed harder than they should have.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“What exactly is Grace signing upstairs?”

“Final consent to the shareholder voting agreement.”

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone completely white.

“Stop it.”

“We can’t.”

“You’re chairman.”

“And she owns her shares.”

“She’s my wife.”

“That has absolutely nothing to do with corporate law.”

Ethan hung up.

He strode toward the elevators.

Vanessa followed.

“Where are you going?”

“Upstairs.”

“To do what?”

“Stop my wife from handing my company to Declan Pierce.”

Vanessa caught his arm.

“Your company?”

He turned.

She stared at him.

“You own nineteen percent.”

Ethan said nothing.

“And Grace owns twenty-two point eight.”

“Not now, Vanessa.”

“But you just called it your company.”

“It is my company.”

Vanessa released his arm.

Something uncomfortable crossed her face.

Perhaps, for the first time, she was seeing the difference between the man Ethan believed himself to be and the numbers written on paper.

The elevator arrived.

Ethan stepped inside.

Vanessa followed.

The private conference level was on the eighteenth floor.

When the doors opened, two men in dark suits were waiting.

Security.

“Mr. Calloway.”

“I need to see my wife.”

“You’ll need to wait.”

“Move.”

Neither man did.

Ethan stepped forward.

Then the conference-room doors opened.

Grace emerged.

The folder was no longer in her hand.

Declan followed.

Behind them came three attorneys, two bankers, and Calloway Meridian’s outside counsel.

Ethan knew immediately.

It was finished.

He looked at Grace.

“You signed it.”

“Yes.”

“How could you do this?”

Grace stared at him.

“How could I sign documents concerning property I legally own?”

“You know what I mean.”

“I’m not sure I do.”

“You handed Pierce control.”

“No.”

Her answer came immediately.

“I agreed to support a proposal being submitted to the board.”

“You went behind my back.”

Grace looked at him for several seconds.

Then she glanced toward Vanessa.

“Interesting choice of words.”

Vanessa looked away.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Grace, please.”

That word changed something.

Not in Grace.

In him.

Ethan Calloway rarely said please.

He negotiated.

Ordered.

Demanded.

Persuaded.

He did not plead.

Grace noticed.

“You want to talk?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

She turned toward Declan.

“I’ll meet you downstairs.”

Declan nodded.

“Take your time.”

Ethan watched him walk away.

Then Grace entered a small private lounge.

Ethan followed.

Vanessa attempted to come too.

Grace stopped at the doorway.

“Not her.”

Vanessa flushed.

Ethan hesitated.

That hesitation lasted less than a second.

But Grace saw it.

Of course she did.

“Fine,” Ethan said.

Vanessa remained outside.

Grace entered.

Ethan shut the door.

For the first time since she had walked into the hotel, they were alone.

He turned toward her.

“How long have you known?”

Grace removed her coat.

“About Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“Eight months.”

The answer hit him like a physical blow.

“Eight—”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“That matters?”

“I want to know.”

Grace looked at him.

“You started charging hotel rooms to the corporate travel account.”

Ethan’s mouth opened.

She continued.

“Then flowers.”

“Restaurants.”

“Car services.”

“Jewelry.”

“The apartment on West Mercer Street.”

His face drained.

“You knew about the apartment?”

“I knew about everything.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

Grace’s hand settled beneath her stomach.

“Because when I first discovered it, I was twelve weeks pregnant.”

Ethan stared at her.

“I had just spent two years trying to have this baby.”

Her voice remained calm.

But now he could hear something underneath it.

Pain.

“I wasn’t going to spend my pregnancy screaming at a man who already knew he was betraying me.”

“Grace—”

“No.”

He stopped.

“You asked.”

She continued.

“So I watched.”

“You watched me?”

“I watched the accounts.”

“The company.”

“The board.”

“Our personal finances.”

“And eventually I realized something.”

“What?”

Grace met his eyes.

“You weren’t only lying to me.”

Ethan went still.

“What does that mean?”

“You’ve been borrowing against Calloway Meridian shares.”

“That’s legal.”

“I didn’t say it wasn’t.”

“You’ve also pledged part of your personal position as collateral.”

His jaw tightened.

“That is none of your concern.”

“It became my concern when you repeatedly asked me to sign documents allowing my shares to be included in a consolidated family voting block.”

Ethan said nothing.

Grace gave a small nod.

“You remember those?”

“They were routine.”

“No.”

“They were convenient.”

“Grace—”

“I refused every one.”

“Because your attorney told you to?”

“Because I read them.”

That silenced him.

Grace had never been stupid.
