PART 1: The Torn Job Offer

My sister tore my $120,000 job offer in half before I had even taken off my graduation cap. Then my mother wrapped both arms around me to stop me from grabbing it back while Vanessa laughed, “Congratulations, Claire. Now we’re both unemployed.”

For three seconds, the university ballroom went completely silent.

Then someone gasped.

Pieces of cream-colored paper drifted onto the polished floor between us.

I stared at them.

Six years of night classes. Two internships. Student loans. Weekends spent coding while Vanessa traveled, partied, and posted motivational quotes about “manifesting success.”

All reduced to confetti beneath her silver heels.

“Vanessa,” Dad muttered from behind us. “What the hell are you doing?”

She smiled.

“Saving her from becoming unbearable.”

Mom tightened her grip around my elbows. “Claire, don’t make a scene.”

I almost laughed.

I was apparently the one making a scene.

Vanessa had lost her marketing job three months earlier after missing deadlines and blaming her supervisor. Since then, every accomplishment of mine had somehow become a personal attack against her.

When I graduated first in my class in computer engineering, Mom told me not to mention it at dinner.

When I received a scholarship award, she asked me to hide the plaque before Vanessa visited.

And when I told them Meridian Dynamics had offered me a senior systems position starting at $120,000, Vanessa stopped speaking to me for two weeks.

Apparently silence had not been enough.

“You think you’re better than me,” she hissed.

“No.”

“Yes, you do.”

She kicked one shredded piece toward me.

“That offer was the only thing making you special.”

I finally pulled free from Mom.

But I didn’t yell.

I didn’t slap Vanessa.

I didn’t even bend down to collect the pieces.

Instead, I looked at her and asked quietly, “You think destroying the paper destroyed the offer?”

Her smile flickered.

Mom stepped between us. “Enough. Vanessa is emotional.”

“She destroyed a legal employment document.”

“Oh, stop being dramatic,” Mom snapped. “They can print another one.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Maybe they won’t.”

That was when I understood.

This had not been impulsive.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

What Vanessa didn’t know was that the document she had destroyed was ceremonial.

My actual employment agreement had been digitally signed forty-eight hours earlier.

And that wasn’t the biggest secret.

Across the ballroom, a university administrator touched his earpiece, glanced toward the stage, then looked directly at me.

I recognized the expression.

Something was about to happen.

I picked up one torn corner of the offer letter and slipped it into my pocket.

Vanessa smirked.

“What? Keeping a souvenir?”

I looked toward the stage.

“Something like that.”

Then the master of ceremonies stepped to the microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated. We have an unexpected guest.”

The doors behind the stage opened.

And the CEO of Meridian Dynamics walked in.
