Part 2: The Empire and the Trap

Gavin’s estate in the hills of Crestview was unlike anything I had ever imagined.

High iron gates guarded the entrance.

Stone walls and towering trees concealed the enormous property from the outside world.

Advanced security systems monitored every section of the grounds.

For the first two weeks, I lived in a haze of disbelief.

I was given a private wing of the mansion, complete with a spacious bedroom, sitting room, and dressing area.

Specialists monitored my pregnancy.

My wardrobe filled with luxurious maternity clothing I had never requested.

But what unsettled me most wasn’t the wealth.

It was Gavin’s patience.

He never demanded that I call him Dad.

He never insisted that I embrace him.

Instead, he allowed me to ask questions, sometimes answering the same ones repeatedly.

Eventually, he explained what he knew about my past.

My birth mother had been his first wife.

During a bitter corporate conflict decades earlier, she had been targeted by dangerous business rivals.

She was killed, and I disappeared into an illegal adoption network before eventually entering the foster system under a false identity.

Records were altered or lost.

For twenty-four years, Gavin searched for me.

A genetic screening connected to my prenatal medical care had finally led his investigators to my identity.

I wanted to believe every word.

But after spending my entire childhood without a family, accepting that someone had searched for me for decades was almost impossible.

Gavin understood.

He gave me time.

Patrick, however, had no intention of allowing me peace.

Once he realized that he couldn’t compete financially with Vanguard Global, he changed tactics.

He went directly to the media.

One afternoon, I sat inside Gavin’s library, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, watching Patrick appear on a nationally televised talk show.

The headline beneath him read:

GRIEVING HUSBAND FIGHTS BILLIONAIRE DYNASTY FOR HIS UNBORN CHILD.

Patrick sat on a comfortable sofa, his hair deliberately disheveled.

He looked exhausted.

Heartbroken.

Almost convincing.

“All I want is my wife back home,” he told the interviewer. “I made some mistakes because of immense business pressure, but I love Serena with all my heart. I have every right to be present for the birth of my daughter, but her powerful family is trying to completely erase my existence.”

I stared at the screen.

He had already discarded Chloe.

Now he wanted the public to believe he was a devoted husband fighting for his family.

Gavin entered the library.

“I can make him disappear legally within an hour,” he said quietly.

His expression remained cold.

“A single phone call. His firm will lose its operating license before noon tomorrow. His personal accounts will be frozen completely.”

I shook my head.

“No, Dad.”

The word still felt unfamiliar, but Gavin’s expression softened when he heard it.

“If you simply destroy him using Vanguard’s immense power, he will play the victim for the rest of his life,” I explained. “He will tell everyone that a ruthless billionaire stole his family away. He will write a book and gather endless sympathy from the public. Men like Patrick live on public attention.”

I turned toward a financial spreadsheet displayed on the monitor.

Patrick’s venture capital firm was heavily leveraged.

Its planned acquisition of Aether Tech depended on emergency financing.

Without fifty million dollars by Friday, the transaction would collapse.

His investors would panic.

His financial problems would become impossible to conceal.

Gavin studied the figures.

“And what do you propose we do?”

“I want Vanguard Global to act as the anonymous syndicate that offers him that exact bridge loan.”

He looked surprised.

“You want to rescue him?”

“No,” I replied. “I want him to believe he has won. I want him to eagerly sign the contract. I want him to pledge his personal assets, his penthouse, his luxury vehicles, his firm, everything he owns, as collateral.”

I looked directly at my father.

“I do not want you to build his trap for him. I want him to construct it with his own hands.”

Gavin remained silent for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

His legal and financial teams began arranging the transaction through subsidiary companies and investment trusts.

Patrick believed he had found the financing that would save his business.

He didn’t know who stood behind the syndicate.

Meanwhile, Vanguard’s investigators examined his financial records.

They discovered discrepancies that suggested he had concealed serious misconduct from his investors.

The most damaging involved approximately four million dollars diverted from client pension funds to cover personal expenses and Chloe’s debts.

Gavin’s attorneys prepared the appropriate documentation.

The loan agreement contained provisions allowing acceleration if Patrick’s firm had materially misrepresented its financial condition.

By Thursday evening, everything was ready.

Patrick was scheduled to complete the transaction the following morning.

I sat in the library reviewing the final documents.

Then a sharp pain shot through my lower abdomen.

I gasped and dropped my stylus.

A second contraction followed.

I gripped the edge of the desk.

My baby wasn’t due for another three weeks.

Then I felt fluid soaking through my clothes.

I looked down.

My water had broken.

Dr. Mercer arrived almost immediately.

“You must move to the medical wing immediately,” he urged. “Your contractions are coming every four minutes.”

“I have less than an hour,” I gasped.

Gavin paced beside me.

“Serena, this is complete madness. I will send our legal team to handle the signing. You need to focus on giving birth.”

“No,” I answered.

He stopped.

I forced myself upright.

“He took my dignity away in front of a courtroom full of people. I am going to destroy his career in person. Get the car ready right now.”

My father looked deeply alarmed.

But he also recognized that I had made my decision.

Forty-five minutes later, I stood outside Patrick’s corporate boardroom wearing a crimson maternity suit.

My hair was pulled into a sleek knot.

Every contraction sent pain through my body.

Beyond the glass doors, Patrick and his executives were celebrating.

Champagne filled their glasses.

Laughter echoed through the room.

“To the successful acquisition of Aether Tech,” Patrick announced, raising his drink. “And to our next billion dollars!”

I pushed open the doors.

The laughter stopped.

Patrick turned toward me.

“Serena?”

His face drained of color.

“What are you doing here? The news reported you were resting at home.”

He glanced at his colleagues, then quickly adopted a concerned expression.

“Sweetheart, you should not be moving around like this. The baby—”

“Do not take a single step closer to me.”

He froze.

I walked to the head of the table and placed my briefcase on the polished wood.

“I am not here to discuss our personal life, Mr. Sterling,” I said. “I am standing here as the Vice President of Acquisitions for the syndicate that funded your emergency loan. I am officially declaring your loan in default and calling in the fifty million dollars immediately.”

Patrick laughed nervously.

“You cannot do that. The funds were transferred an hour ago. The legal agreement gives my firm five full years to repay the balance.”

“Section Four, Paragraph B,” I replied. “Immediate acceleration of the loan and forfeiture of all pledged collateral in the event of pre-existing, undisclosed corporate fraud.”

His smile disappeared.

“Fraud? My financial records are completely clean!”

“Your records are completely fabricated.”

I opened the briefcase and placed the forensic audit reports on the table.

“Our forensic team discovered the four million dollars you secretly stole from your client pension funds to cover Chloe’s debts and maintain your lifestyle.”

The boardroom erupted in shocked whispers.

Patrick staggered backward.

“You are officially in default,” I continued.

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“I now own this investment firm. I own your penthouse. I own your luxury cars. I own the chair you were sitting in a moment ago. Based on the exact terms of your agreement, you walk away today with absolute nothing.”

Patrick’s knees buckled.

He fell beside the table.

“Serena, please! I will be sent to prison! I am the father of your child! You cannot do this to me!”

I looked down at him.

“Let us see how you manage to survive without me.”

Then I turned and walked away.

Two plainclothes federal officers entered the boardroom and identified themselves.

Behind me, Patrick began shouting.

But I barely heard him.

I had reached the middle of the hallway when another contraction tore through my body.

My legs gave way.

A security officer caught me before I struck the floor.

“Get the medical team!” someone shouted.

As they hurried me toward the elevator, I heard the metallic click of handcuffs from the boardroom.

Patrick’s empire was collapsing.

And my daughter was about to enter the world.
