My Husband Secretly Drugged My Tea Every Night, But When I Pretended To Sleep, His Black Bag Revealed A Terrifying Secret And Another Possible Victim.

PART 1: SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH MY TEA

At 2:17 in the morning, I remained perfectly still beside my husband, Dererick, forcing my breathing to stay slow and steady while watching him through barely open eyes. He moved silently around our dark bedroom, wearing latex gloves and carrying a small black bag I had never seen before, completely certain that I was unconscious.

Three hours earlier, Dererick had prepared my usual cup of chamomile tea. He had been making that same drink for me every night for almost a month, but after he went to brush his teeth, I poured it into the bathroom sink, rinsed the cup, got into bed, and pretended to fall asleep. Watching him now confirmed the suspicion I had been terrified to believe. Whatever he had been putting into that tea was clearly meant to keep me unconscious, and the confidence with which he moved suggested he had done this before.

The strange pattern had started about three weeks earlier. Whenever Dererick stayed home overnight, I woke the next morning feeling unusually groggy and disoriented, sometimes noticing that my pajamas were twisted or my body was positioned differently from how I remembered falling asleep.

At first, I blamed exhaustion. Dererick had been traveling often for his medical-equipment sales job, while I was working long hours to complete an important project for my graphic design business.

Then my sister Clare called one Tuesday morning.

“Anna, are you okay? You sounded really weird last night when we talked. Like you were drunk or something, but you said you hadn’t been drinking.”

I couldn’t remember speaking with her at all. The last thing I remembered from the previous night was drinking the tea Dererick had prepared and going to bed.

After that, I began watching everything more carefully. The unnatural exhaustion happened only when Dererick was home, while on nights he traveled, I slept normally and woke refreshed.

Then I started noticing small, unexplained marks on my arms and legs. Whenever I mentioned them, Dererick acted concerned and suggested I might be sleepwalking, even offering to take me to a doctor.

For a while, his apparent concern made me feel guilty about suspecting him. But I could no longer dismiss the pattern, so I began quietly testing what happened whenever I avoided the tea.

On nights when I told him I was too full to drink it, I woke normally. Whenever I accepted it, I felt exhausted and confused the following morning, and one night when I claimed to have a headache and went straight to bed without drinking anything, Dererick remained downstairs for more than an hour before coming to bed, visibly irritated.

That was when I became convinced he was secretly sedating me.

I still had no idea why.

So that night, I pretended to drink the tea and waited.

Dererick came to the bed and studied my face for several seconds while I fought every instinct urging me to move. Then he reached into the black bag, pulled out a small camera, and placed it on the dresser facing the bed.

    A tiny red light appeared.

    He was recording me.

Next, Dererick opened a notebook and examined several pages as though following instructions. He took out a pair of scissors, cut a small piece from the hem of my pajama top, and carefully sealed the fabric inside a plastic bag.

I wanted to sit up and demand an explanation, but I remained completely still.

He started taking photographs while repositioning my arm and adjusting my body. Every movement was deliberate and methodical, as if he had practiced handling someone without waking them.

Then his phone buzzed. Dererick read the message and smiled.

Another message arrived, followed by a third. He took several more photographs and immediately sent them to whoever was contacting him.

That was when the truth became even more terrifying.

My husband was not doing this alone.

    PART 2: I WASN’T HIS ONLY VICTIM

Dererick continued moving through the bedroom as though I were nothing more than an unconscious object. He opened his laptop beside the bed, transferred the photographs he had just taken, and appeared to upload them somewhere while repeatedly checking the notebook for instructions.

His phone continued buzzing, and every new message seemed to direct his next move. At one point, he took several more photographs and immediately sent them back, confirming that someone else was actively watching and directing at least part of what was happening.

Then Dererick removed a small swab from the black bag and collected samples from several areas of my skin. He sealed each one in a separate plastic bag with the same calm, clinical precision he had used when cutting the fabric from my pajamas.

Eventually, he put away the camera, notebook, and laptop. Before leaving the bedroom, he leaned down and kissed my forehead with the same tenderness he had shown me countless times throughout our marriage.

    “Sweet dreams, Anna.”

Hearing his gentle voice after everything I had just witnessed made my stomach turn. A few minutes later, I heard the front door close quietly, followed by his car pulling away from the house shortly before three in the morning.

Only then did I let myself move.

My hands shook so badly that I could barely sit up. Dererick had not only been secretly sedating me; he had photographed me, repositioned my body, collected samples, documented everything, and communicated with other people while doing it.

He had told me earlier that he was leaving for a three-day business trip to Chicago, which gave me a narrow opportunity to discover what he was involved in. After waiting several more minutes to make sure he wasn’t returning, I began searching for the personal laptop he kept separate from his work computer.

Eventually, I found a locked briefcase beneath our bed. I tried our anniversary as the combination, and when the lock clicked open, relief and dread hit me simultaneously.

The laptop contained hundreds of photographs arranged into folders by date. Some went back nearly eight months, long before I had started noticing anything unusual.

Then I saw folders labeled with women’s names.

    Jennifer.

    Patricia.

    Michelle.

There were at least six women.

I opened Jennifer’s folder and found photographs disturbingly similar to those Dererick had taken of me. As the dates progressed, however, she appeared increasingly weak and unwell, while Patricia’s and Michelle’s folders showed the same horrifying pattern.

Then I found a document titled “Client Communications.”

It showed that Dererick had been operating an organized criminal business in which paying customers requested photographs and specific staged scenarios involving women whose conditions gradually deteriorated. Different requests carried different prices, and several messages showed customers giving detailed instructions about what they wanted him to document.

I kept searching until I found an email sent only two days earlier that mentioned me by name. One customer had asked about something called “Graduation Services,” and Dererick’s reply made my hands tremble again.

He had written that I was “almost ready.”

He would “begin the final phase soon.”

I had no idea exactly what that meant, but after seeing the later photographs of the other women, I knew waiting to discover the answer could be dangerous. I copied every file I could onto a flash drive, then searched the bedroom until I found Dererick’s notebook hidden inside his sock drawer.

The entries contained detailed records of substances, amounts, physical reactions, and customer requests. More recent notes mentioned people asking about “permanent access,” and Dererick had written that I was becoming suspicious and he might need to “accelerate the timeline.” That was enough.

Whatever his final phase involved, I believed I was in immediate danger. I photographed every page of the notebook, put the laptop and briefcase back exactly where I had found them, and forced myself to think carefully about what I should do next.

Dererick could not know that I had discovered his secret. Not yet.

But in three days, he was supposed to return home.

And before that happened, I needed to make certain I would not be waiting there alone.

PART 3: MY NEIGHBOR KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG

After copying the files and photographing every page of Dererick’s notebook, I carefully restored everything to its original position. I couldn’t risk giving him any reason to suspect that I had uncovered his secret, but I also knew I had reached the point where I could no longer handle this by myself.

My first call went to my sister, Clare. She was working an overnight shift at the hospital, so it went straight to voicemail.

“It’s an emergency. Call me as soon as you can.”

While waiting, I thought about our elderly neighbor, Mr. Peterson. He spent hours sitting on his front porch, and if Dererick had truly been leaving our house at two or three in the morning for months, there was a good chance Mr. Peterson had noticed something.

It was nearly five in the morning, but a light was still on in his kitchen. I crossed the street and knocked. The moment he opened the door in his bathrobe, his expression changed when he saw my face.

“Anna, dear, what’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

We sat at his kitchen table while I struggled to keep my hands steady. I didn’t tell him everything right away because I first needed to know whether what he had witnessed matched what I had discovered.

“Mr. Peterson, I need to ask you something. Have you noticed anything strange at our house at night? Anything unusual with Dererick?”

    His expression turned serious.

“Anna, I’ve been wondering when you were going to ask me that.”

    My stomach tightened.

    “What do you mean?”

Mr. Peterson told me that for months he had watched Dererick leave our house at two or three in the morning. Even more disturbing, unfamiliar cars sometimes stopped farther down the street before people got out and approached our house on foot after dark.

    “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Apparently, Dererick had already created an explanation. He told Mr. Peterson that I had severe sleeping problems and took powerful medication, claiming he sometimes had to leave during the night for medical reasons or emergency appointments.

“He asked me not to mention it to you. He said you were embarrassed.”

The revelation made me feel physically sick. Dererick hadn’t merely hidden what he was doing from me; he had prepared an entire cover story so anyone who noticed something suspicious would have a believable explanation.

Thankfully, Mr. Peterson had never fully trusted it. He said I had always appeared perfectly healthy, and the strangers arriving at unusual hours certainly hadn’t looked like doctors or medical professionals.

I showed him photographs of several pages from Dererick’s notebook. As he read the entries, the color gradually disappeared from his face.

“Dear God, Anna, we need to call the police right now.”

We called 911, but the dispatcher initially treated my report cautiously, apparently assuming it was a complicated domestic dispute. They promised to send an officer when one became available, but Mr. Peterson immediately shook his head.

“Dererick could come back at any time.”

    Then my phone rang.

    It was Clare.

“Anna, I got your message. What’s going on?”

I told her everything, starting with the tea and continuing through the hidden camera, the photographs, the other women, and the disturbing files on Dererick’s laptop. Clare remained completely silent until I finished.

“I’m coming over right now. And I’m bringing someone with me.”

About an hour later, Clare arrived with Detective Martinez, an investigator she knew through the hospital who had experience with complex cases. I handed Martinez the flash drive, and after reviewing only part of the evidence, her entire demeanor changed.

“This is much bigger than just what he was doing to you. Based on what you’ve found, he’s been running a criminal enterprise for years.”

Martinez immediately contacted additional officers and investigators. Within hours, they began identifying people in several states who appeared connected to Dererick’s operation.

    But one serious problem remained.

    Dererick was still free.

Worse, investigators discovered that his supposed three-day Chicago trip was ending much sooner than he had told me. He was expected home that same evening.

Detective Martinez decided they couldn’t risk giving him time to disappear.

They were going to let my husband walk straight back into our house.

And this time, I would be waiting for him.

PART 4: THE TRAP WAITING FOR MY HUSBAND

Detective Martinez acted quickly once she understood the scope of the evidence on the flash drive. Officers began watching our house while investigators traced phone numbers, financial records, and other information from Dererick’s files. Within hours, they had identified several men in different states who appeared to be connected to his operation.

Some of those men were already being located by law enforcement, but Dererick remained the immediate threat. He was supposed to be away for three days, yet investigators learned that he was returning home that evening, leaving us very little time to decide what to do.

Detective Martinez proposed a plan that terrified me.

Instead of confronting Dererick somewhere else, the police wanted him to return home believing everything was normal. Officers would surround the property while I acted as though I had discovered nothing, giving investigators the opportunity to catch him with the equipment and evidence he normally used.

Every instinct told me to leave the house and never return. But after seeing the names of the other women and understanding how organized his operation was, I wanted the police to have enough evidence to dismantle the entire network instead of building a case around only what he had done to me. That evening, I sat in our living room with a concealed wire beneath my shirt. Knowing officers were stationed nearby should have made me feel safer, but my chest tightened whenever I heard a car pass outside.

At exactly seven o’clock, Dererick returned home.

He walked through the door carrying flowers and chocolates, wearing the affectionate expression I had once trusted completely.

    “I missed you.”

He kissed me, and I forced myself to react normally. Sitting beside him while remembering the hidden photographs, customer messages, notebooks, and names on his laptop felt almost unreal, but I couldn’t let him detect anything different.

Eventually, it was time for bed.

Dererick went into the kitchen and came back holding the familiar cup of chamomile tea. For weeks, that simple nighttime ritual had seemed thoughtful, but now the sight of the cup made my stomach twist.

    “Sweet dreams, honey.”

    He kissed my forehead.

I pretended to drink the tea, then went upstairs and lay completely still in bed. The officers knew what was happening, but waiting for Dererick to make his next move was one of the longest twenty minutes of my life.

    Then I heard him moving.

Dererick retrieved the black bag and entered the bedroom with the same confidence I had witnessed before. Believing I was unconscious, he positioned the camera, opened his notebook, and began preparing for another session.

This time, however, he wasn’t alone with me.

    The bedroom door suddenly opened.

Detective Martinez entered with three officers, and Dererick froze. The color drained from his face as the police surrounded him, while the black bag, camera, and notebook remained within reach.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to understand what was happening. Then his eyes moved from the officers to me.

    I opened my eyes.

Dererick stared at me as realization slowly replaced confusion.

    “You knew.”

For the first time since I had known him, he looked genuinely afraid.

I sat up and held his gaze.

    “I knew. I knew everything.”

The officers took control of the room and escorted him away. Dererick kept looking back at me as though he still couldn’t comprehend how the secret life he had built so carefully had collapsed in a single evening.

But arresting my husband was only the beginning.

The evidence on his laptop was about to reveal just how many lives his operation had already damaged.

PART 5: THE LIFE HE COULDN’T TAKE FROM ME

As officers led Dererick from our house, he kept turning around to look at me. I couldn’t tell whether his expression came from anger, disbelief, or the realization that the secret world he had spent years building had finally collapsed.

His arrest proved to be only the beginning. The laptop, notebook, messages, photographs, and financial records gave investigators enough information to expose a much larger network operating across several states, and eventually seventeen women came forward as victims.

For months, I had believed something was wrong with me. I blamed stress for my exhaustion, questioned my memory when I couldn’t remember conversations, and even felt guilty when Dererick suggested that I might be sleepwalking.

Only afterward did I understand how deliberately he had created that confusion. He had not merely concealed what he was doing; he had constructed explanations around every symptom so I would doubt myself long before I ever thought to doubt him.

Investigators also uncovered how carefully the operation had been organized. The folders, customer communications, staged photographs, and detailed records showed that Dererick’s behavior went far beyond our marriage and had been developing for years.

Eventually, the case came to an end.

Dererick was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Knowing he could never return did not immediately make me feel safe again. After the investigation, I moved in with Clare because I couldn’t bear the thought of sleeping alone in the house where I had spent so many nights unknowingly vulnerable.

Recovery took much longer than the arrest. I spent months in therapy rebuilding my sense of safety, and one of the hardest things to regain was the ability to trust another person without wondering what might be hiding behind their kindness.

Clare remained beside me through all of it. I also connected with other survivors, and hearing their experiences helped me understand that surviving what Dererick had done did not have to become the final chapter of my life.

A year later, I decided to use the skills I already had as a graphic designer to help women facing similar situations. I created a nonprofit organization that connected survivors with information, support services, and resources they might otherwise struggle to find.

Creating websites and educational materials gave my work a purpose I had never expected. Every resource we published felt like a small reversal of the system Dererick had created around secrecy, isolation, and making women distrust their own instincts.

    The nightmares never disappeared completely.

Sometimes I still woke during the night remembering the tiny red light on his camera or the sound of him softly wishing me goodnight while believing I was unconscious. But as the months passed, those nights became less frequent.

Whenever fear returned, I reminded myself of what had actually happened. I had noticed that something was wrong, tested the pattern when his explanations stopped making sense, gathered evidence, reached out to people I trusted, and helped investigators expose something much larger than I had first imagined.

Dererick had expected me to remain confused and dependent on him. Instead, the night I stopped drinking his tea and pretended to sleep became the beginning of the end of everything he had created.

For a long time, I believed recovery meant becoming the woman I had been before discovering the truth. Eventually, I realized I didn’t need to return to an earlier version of myself.

    I could build someone new.

Dererick had tried to reduce me to another victim inside his secret operation, but that was not the identity I carried forward. I survived him, and then I used what I had survived to help other women reclaim their own voices and trust themselves again.

Sometimes I still remembered lying motionless in that bedroom at 2:17 in the morning, terrified that opening my eyes would reveal I was awake.

Now I understood that keeping them open was exactly what saved me.

I trusted myself. I asked for help. And I survived.

That was the one thing Dererick could never take from me.
