Part 3: The Secret Behind the Clinic Records
For a long moment, Mark stood motionless.
The phone remained in his hand.
Claire was beside the doorway, staring at him as though she no longer recognized the man she had once married.
I could barely feel my fingers.
I had entered that evening believing I knew the worst thing my husband had done.
He had invited his ex-wife to his birthday dinner.
Allowed her to humiliate me.
Kissed her outside a hotel.
Lied about their relationship.
And described our marriage as something that trapped him.
I had prepared myself to confront infidelity.
I had prepared myself to end a marriage.
I had even prepared myself to raise our child without him.
But nothing had prepared me for messages about old embryo records.
Nothing had prepared me for the name of a fertility doctor from Mark’s first marriage appearing on his phone.
And nothing had prepared me for the fear on his face.
I looked at Claire.
She looked just as confused as I felt.
That frightened me.
For most of the evening, I had believed she was part of Mark’s plan.
I had imagined that she knew every lie.
That she understood exactly what he had been doing.
That they had agreed to make me feel inadequate in my own home.
Now I wasn’t sure.
Claire had shown me the messages herself.
She had admitted that Mark contacted her before our wedding.
She had exposed the conversations he had tried to hide.
And when I read the message about the clinic, she looked genuinely horrified.
Whatever had happened, it seemed Mark had been keeping secrets from both of us.
I turned toward him.
“Mark, look at me.”
He didn’t.
His gaze stayed fixed on the phone.
I remembered how confidently he had spoken earlier.
How quickly he had accused me of spying.
How easily he had dismissed the photograph.
How calmly he had insisted that the hotel room meant nothing.
Every time I confronted him with evidence, he had found another explanation.
Coffee.
A private conversation.
Venting.
Frustration.
One mistake.
Poorly chosen words.
But now there was no explanation.
Only silence.
And a phone call he had been desperate to avoid.
I thought about our pregnancy.
The positive test.
The happiness I believed we shared.
The tears in Mark’s eyes.
The way he had held me and told me how lucky he felt.
I remembered him assembling the crib.
I remembered him placing a hand against my stomach.
I remembered believing that whatever problems existed between us, our baby was something we both wanted.
Then I remembered what Claire had said.
“You told me she got pregnant and everything happened too quickly.”
And something else.
“You told me you weren’t even sure the baby had been planned.”
I had dismissed those statements as cruel lies meant to hurt me.
But now, with the clinic messages in front of me, I couldn’t dismiss anything.
I looked at Mark again.
He was still standing near the dining table.
The ivory envelopes remained scattered across it.
The photographs were still visible.
His birthday dinner had ended hours earlier.
Yet the house seemed trapped in the same terrible moment.
The moment when everything I thought I knew about my marriage began falling apart.
I had wanted to expose the truth about Claire.
Instead, I had uncovered the beginning of something much larger.
I remembered the question I had asked him earlier.
“Why did you marry me?”
And his answer.
“You made everything easier.”
At the time, I thought he meant I was convenient.
That I trusted him.
That I didn’t challenge his decisions.
That he could compare me to Claire without expecting consequences.
But now I wondered whether those words meant something else.
Something I hadn’t understood.
My mind kept returning to the message.
If the dates match, there could be a legal problem. I need the old embryo records before she discovers anything.
What dates?
What legal problem?
What was he afraid I would discover?
And why had he contacted Claire instead of speaking to me?
I couldn’t answer any of those questions.
Neither could Claire.
Only Mark knew.
And he was the one person in the room who seemed determined not to speak.
The silence stretched.
I placed my hand over my stomach again.
Our baby moved beneath my palm.
That tiny movement reminded me that whatever happened next, I had someone else to protect.
I couldn’t afford to ignore what I had seen.
I couldn’t let Mark explain everything away simply because the truth frightened me.
For months, I had tried to be the wife he wanted.
I had accepted the comparisons.
Swallowed the insults.
Questioned whether my discomfort was unreasonable.
Even when he invited Claire into our home and allowed her to take my place beside him, I had initially wondered whether I was overreacting.
But the evidence had changed that.
The photograph proved the kiss.
The hotel records exposed the lie.

The messages revealed that Mark had been discussing our marriage with Claire long before I suspected anything.
And now the clinic records suggested another secret.
One I couldn’t begin to understand.
I looked toward the front door.
Only a short time earlier, I had opened it and told Claire to leave.
I had believed that removing her from my home would finally allow me to confront my husband.
But she had returned with information I couldn’t ignore.
Now the woman I had spent seven months being compared with was standing beside me, waiting for the same explanation.
Neither of us had the advantage Mark had tried to give us.
Neither of us seemed to know the whole truth.
For the first time that evening, the comparison between us no longer mattered.
What mattered was the man standing in front of us.
The man who had manipulated both relationships.
The man who had used one woman to hurt the other.
The man who had apparently believed he could control what each of us knew.
I remembered Claire’s words.
“You used both of us.”
Perhaps that was the only thing we could agree on.
I looked at Mark.
His eyes finally met mine.
I saw fear there.
Real fear.
Not the wounded pride he had displayed when his family opened the envelopes.
Not the anger he had shown when I asked him to leave.
Not the outrage he had expressed over the property deed.
This was different.
He looked as though he understood that the next few words could change everything.
And perhaps they would.
I thought about the eleven days I had spent preparing for his birthday dinner.
The evidence I had collected.
The lawyer I had consulted.
The precautions I had taken.
I had believed I was prepared.
I had believed the envelopes contained everything I needed to know.
But the truth had continued unfolding long after the guests left.
First Claire admitted the hotel room had not been what Mark claimed.
Then she revealed what he had said about our marriage.
Then she showed me the messages from before our wedding.
And finally, the conversation about the fertility clinic.
Every revelation had changed the meaning of the one before it.
The man I married had become a stranger.
I wasn’t sure which memories I could trust anymore.
But I knew I couldn’t pretend I hadn’t seen those messages.
I couldn’t pretend Dr. Voss’s office hadn’t called.
And I couldn’t pretend Mark’s fear meant nothing.
My hand remained against my stomach.
I thought about the future I had imagined.
A nursery.
A family.
A child growing up in a home filled with love.
I had believed Mark wanted those things with me.
Perhaps part of him had.
But the man standing in front of me had also been telling Claire that he felt trapped.
He had questioned our planned pregnancy.
He had contacted a fertility doctor connected to his previous marriage.
And he had desperately tried to prevent me from discovering why.
I didn’t know what the explanation would be.
I only knew that I needed to hear it.
Not another excuse.
Not another accusation that I was emotional.
Not another claim that I had misunderstood.
The truth.
Whatever it was.
I steadied my breathing.
Claire remained silent.
Mark looked from her to me.
His phone was no longer ringing.
But the unanswered questions filled the room.
I thought about how the evening had begun.
A birthday celebration.
A crowded dining table.
An ex-wife occupying my chair.
A husband publicly comparing two women.
And a pregnant wife who had finally decided to stop accepting humiliation.
I had believed the surprise was mine.
The ivory envelopes.
The hotel photograph.
The property deed.
The lawyer.
The plan to protect myself.
But now I understood that the most devastating surprise might be the one Mark had kept hidden from everyone.
I looked into his eyes.
“What exactly did you do before I became pregnant?”
He closed his eyes again.
For a moment, I thought he might refuse to answer.
Then his shoulders lowered.
His lips parted.
And I knew he was finally about to speak.
Whatever he had done, whatever connection existed between the clinic records and my pregnancy, the answer was waiting behind those few seconds of silence.
Claire stood frozen.
I held my stomach.
Mark opened his eyes.
The fear inside them was unmistakable.
Then he finally began to whisper the truth.
And whatever he said next was worse than anything I had imagined.
Because Claire’s phone slipped from her hand.
And I realized that the affair, the hotel, and the humiliation at his birthday dinner might not have been the darkest secrets in our marriage.
Not even close.
