PART 1
The moment I understood what she meant, every bit of color disappeared from my face.
My husband, Julian, and I had spent months planning our family vacation.
My younger brother, Jim, had recently begun a new job and moved into another apartment. All those changes had left him exhausted and stressed, so at the last minute, I invited him to come with us. His girlfriend had intended to join us too, but she couldn’t get time away from work.
Jim came by himself.

Our five-year-old daughter, Lily, adored her uncle. During the first few days, everything was peaceful. We spent mornings beside the water, ate meals together at the resort, and watched Lily build sandcastles while Jim kept her laughing.

Then she leaned closer to me.
“Mommy,” she whispered, “Daddy told me not to tell you what he and Uncle Jim did in our hotel room.”
My stomach twisted.
Before I could ask her anything, Lily quickly continued.
“But you always say I shouldn’t keep secrets from you, Mommy. So I wanted to tell you.”
I immediately knelt in front of her, doing everything I could to keep my expression gentle.
“That’s right, sweetheart,” I said carefully. “You can always tell me anything. What happened in the hotel room?”
Lily nodded and began explaining with the innocent honesty only a five-year-old could have.
And with every sentence she spoke, my heartbeat grew louder…
