About a week ago, I asked a friend if I could stay in his old apartment while my own place was being renovated, and he agreed without hesitation.
But after only a few days there, I started noticing unusual itchy bumps appearing on my skin, especially on my legs and back. Since I hadn’t changed anything about my hygiene routine, used the same shampoo, and kept taking regular showers, I started suspecting that something inside the apartment might be causing it.
Before I could afford visiting a doctor, I searched online hoping to figure out what might be behind the irritation, and almost every result pointed toward bed bugs.
The apartment itself was quite old, and the mattress had apparently been there for years. Still, when I checked it carefully, I couldn’t spot anything unusual. Even so, I tried taking precautions. I left the mattress outside on the balcony in direct sunlight for an entire day and added several extra covers before sleeping on it again.
Unfortunately, nothing really improved, and I had no choice but to continue staying there for the rest of the week.
According to the NHS, bed bugs are tiny insects that often live in bedding or furniture. Although their bites are not considered dangerous to health, they can be extremely itchy.
Bed bug bites can leave you uncomfortable, itchy, and unable to sleep properly at night. They can also be difficult to tell apart from other insect bites. Some common signs may help identify them, although not everyone reacts the same way, and some people barely react at all.
Red, itchy bumps – Bed bug bites often appear as small red bumps on the skin. Even though bed bugs do not spread diseases, the bites can become irritating and intensely itchy. Excessive scratching may break the skin and increase the risk of infection.
Bites on exposed skin – Bed bugs usually feed during the night on skin left uncovered while sleeping.
Timing of symptoms – The bites are not always immediately noticeable. In some cases, itchy marks can appear hours, days, or even weeks later depending on the individual’s reaction and the severity of the exposure.
Allergic reactions – Certain people are far more sensitive to bed bug bites than others. In rare situations, bites may cause large swollen welts, painful inflammation, or extremely severe allergic reactions.
If unexplained red bumps suddenly begin appearing on your skin, it is always best to contact a medical professional for proper advice and treatment.
