PART 1

Mom passed away when I was nine. Dad spent long hours working, made sure there was food in the refrigerator, and signed my school paperwork. But he rarely showed any interest in how my day had gone.

“Can I get new shoes? These let water in,” I remember asking him once.

“Put on another pair of socks,” he said.

I had someone I could call my father, but he hardly ever tried to act like a dad.

On my eighteenth birthday, he pushed a small piece of paper across the kitchen table.

“Pay me $250 for your room. On the first of every month.”

“You’re charging your own son rent?” I was stunned.

“You’re an adult now.”

I kept waiting for him to start laughing.

But Dad was completely serious about collecting $250 from me every month.

I worked stocking store shelves, contributed toward groceries, and struggled to put aside enough money to leave home.

Then my car would break down, or my shifts at work would be reduced.

Month after month, another $250 disappeared.

Dad sometimes returned home carrying beer or brand-new fishing equipment while I was repairing the worn-out soles of my work shoes with glue.

There were weeks when we exchanged no words at all, walking past one another in the hallway as though we were complete strangers.

Five years afterward, Dad passed away unexpectedly.

For years, I’d pictured how calm and peaceful the house might become once he was no longer there.

But following his funeral, I found myself standing by the entrance, looking at his work boots and unable to bring myself to move them.

That evening, Marcus, his closest friend, arrived at the door. In his hands was a cardboard box secured tightly with packing tape.

“Your dad left this with me.”

He placed the box on our kitchen table.

“He asked me to give it to you only after he was gone.”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“What, did he save every dollar of rent I paid him?”

Marcus remained serious.

“I wouldn’t make any guesses until you see what’s inside.”

My hands struggled to peel away the tape.

I opened the cardboard flaps.

For a moment, I was convinced Marcus had mistakenly delivered someone else’s belongings.

But when I examined the contents more carefully, I collapsed into Dad’s chair and began crying uncontrollably, until Marcus had to support me to keep me upright.
