Don Carlos was one of those men in Santo Domingo everyone knew about, even if they had never met him personally. At fifty-five, owner of several construction companies, he had built his empire brick by brick. Widowed for eight years, he lived alone with his mother, Doña Rosa, in a massive estate on the outskirts of the city that looked more like a palace than a home. People said he had more money than he could spend… but very little love in his life.

When the video ended, the church was completely silent.
Don Carlos took the priest’s microphone. His voice sounded rough, but steady.
“This is the woman I was about to marry. The woman who attacked my mother because she caught her sneaking around with the gardener. I loved her. I gave her everything. And this is how she repaid me.”
Vanessa burst into tears.
“Carlos, please… it’s not what it looks like, I—”
He didn’t let her finish.
He pulled the engagement ring from his pocket and threw it onto the marble floor in front of her. The sound of gold striking stone echoed through the entire church.
“Get out of my life. And let everyone see who you truly are.”
Then he did something nobody expected.
He walked over to Doña Rosa, sitting in the front row, dropped to his knees before her, and kissed her hands in front of everyone.

“Forgive me, Mom. Never again.”
The guests began whispering among themselves. Some stood up. Vanessa tried to run toward him, but security guards—already warned by Don Carlos—gently stopped her and escorted her out through a side door. She screamed his name while they dragged her away.
That was the moment that would hurt her forever.
THE CONSEQUENCES THAT CAME AFTER
The wedding was canceled on the spot. Guests left speaking quietly, some recording everything on their phones. By the next day, the story had spread through every WhatsApp group and social media page. Vanessa’s name was ruined.
Don Carlos never saw her again. He sold the mansion they had shared and moved with Doña Rosa into a smaller apartment in the city. He says he finally sleeps peacefully now.
Miguel, the gardener, disappeared from the country two weeks later.
And Vanessa…
Months later, people discovered the twist nobody expected: she was already three months pregnant. The baby belonged to Miguel. She had planned to pass the child off as Don Carlos’s and continue living off his money.
When everything collapsed, she lost it all: the car, the jewelry, the bank account he had opened for her. She ended up returning to the same neighborhood she came from, alone, pregnant, and with her reputation destroyed.
As for Doña Rosa, she got her son back.
She says that slap she received ended up being the best thing that ever happened to her.
